Ronny Chieng

Ronny Chieng is a Malaysian-Chinese comedian, actor, and writer acknowledged for his sharp wit and satirical style. Born in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, and brought up in both Singapore and the U.S., Chieng provides a unique multicultural perspective that is frequently showcased in his comedy. He has gained significant recognition as a senior correspondent on “The Daily Show with Trevor Noah,” and as the creator and star of the sitcom “Ronny Chieng: International Student.”

With extensive experience in stand-up comedy, Chieng has earned acclaim for his performances, including his Netflix specials. His debut show on the platform, “Asian Comedian Destroys America!” was released in 2019 and garnered significant popularity. His subsequent specials, "Speakeasy" and "Ronny Chieng Takes Chinatown," were released in 2022, and a third Netflix special, "Love to Hate It," was released in 2024. His comedy often addresses issues such as racism, cultural stereotypes, and the immigrant experience, delivered with a blend of sarcasm and observational humor. He is also a rotating host on "The Daily Show."

Beyond his achievements in television and stand-up, Chieng has also made a mark in film. He had notable roles in “Crazy Rich Asians” and an English version of "Inspector Sun and the Curse of the Black Widow." More recently, he was seen in "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings," and lent his voice to "Kung Fu Panda 4" in 2024. Furthermore, he has been announced as the new voice of Kahn Souphanousinphone in the revival of "King of the Hill" in 2025.

Chieng's career trajectory has also been highlighted by the recognition he has received. He won the Best Newcomer Award at the Melbourne Comedy Festival in 2012 and the Directors' Choice Award at the same festival in 2014. He was nominated for Best Comedy Release at the ARIA Music Awards in 2014 and 2015 for "The Ron Way" and "Chieng Reaction," respectively.

As of April 2025, Chieng became a U.S. citizen. He continues to engage with audiences through various platforms, including an announced co-headlining North American tour with Hasan Minhaj named "Hasan Hates Ronny | Ronny Hates Hasan" in 2025, and his participation in "28th Annual Comics Come Home." In recognition of his impact, July 27 is celebrated as Ronny Chieng Day in Oahu.
