Peter Laviolette

Peter Laviolette is a National Hockey League coach with a career spanning more than two decades and seven franchises. As a player, Laviolette spent the majority of his career in the minor leagues and represented the United States in the Olympics twice, serving as captain of the 1994 Olympic squad. Although his playing career did not reach the NHL level, his transition to coaching marked a significant shift. Laviolette captured the Calder Cup Championship with the Providence Bruins of the American Hockey League and earned AHL Coach of the Year honors in his first season, leading the Bruins to an AHL-best record following a challenging previous season.

Laviolette began his NHL head coaching career with the New York Islanders, registering a 77-62-25 regular season record and leading the team to Stanley Cup Playoff berths in both seasons. He then moved to the Carolina Hurricanes, guiding the team to a Southeast Division title and their first Stanley Cup championship in franchise history after winning two seven-game playoff series. Laviolette became the fourth American-born coach to win the Stanley Cup. That same year, he also coached the U.S. Olympic men's hockey team at the Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy.

Laviolette has demonstrated the ability to build competitive teams across multiple organizations. With the Philadelphia Flyers, his team became the third NHL team to come back from a 3-0 series deficit, defeating the Boston Bruins in game seven to reach the Eastern Conference Final. He also guided the Nashville Predators to the Stanley Cup Final. Laviolette is one of four coaches in NHL history to reach the Stanley Cup Final with three different franchises and one of four coaches to win five consecutive Game 7s in Stanley Cup Playoff history.

Laviolette has coached his teams to the 50-win plateau three times and the 100-point mark in eight seasons, including a campaign where he led the Predators to a franchise-best 117 points with 53 wins, earning his first Presidents' Trophy as a head coach. In his first year with the New York Rangers, Laviolette led the team to a 55-23-4 record, winning the Presidents' Trophy, and became the first head coach in NHL history to guide six different teams to the Stanley Cup playoffs. Over his coaching career, Laviolette has been named a Jack Adams Award finalist twice and an NHL All-Star Coach on four occasions.

Laviolette stands as the seventh-winningest coach in NHL history with an all-time record of 846-562-186 spanning 23 seasons, and his 846 regular-season wins rank first among all U.S.-born coaches in league history. Laviolette was named head coach of the Los Angeles Kings, further extending a career defined by resilience, adaptability, and the ability to elevate franchises to championship contention.
