Neil Flynn

Neil Flynn is an American actor and comedian whose career encompasses stage, film, and television, with a foundation in improvisational comedy and theatrical training. Flynn began his career as a dramatic actor, earning a Joseph Jefferson Award for his performance in a production of "The Ballad of the Sad Cafe" at Absolute Theatre Company in his hometown. After several years pursuing opportunities in Hollywood, a visit to Chicago's ImprovOlympic led him to focus on improvisational comedy. He became a regular at ImprovOlympic and Second City, later forming the improv ensemble Beer Shark Mice with Pat Finn and David Koechner.

Flynn performed with numerous comedy troupes in the Chicago area before making his film debut in "Major League." He went on to appear in supporting roles in films such as "Rookie of the Year," "The Fugitive," and "Magnolia." Flynn worked with comedy acting coach Del Close, known for mentoring actors including Bill Murray and John Candy. For the television series "Scrubs," Flynn originally auditioned for the role of Dr. Cox but was cast as the Janitor, a character intended for only the first episode. The role expanded after the show's creator saw Flynn's improvisational skills in performance, leading to a recurring part.

Flynn gained widespread recognition for his portrayal of the Janitor on "Scrubs," appearing in more than 170 episodes. He became known for improvising many of his lines, contributing an unpredictable wit and physical presence to the character. Following his work on "Scrubs," Flynn had a starring role in the comedy film "Hoot" and supporting roles in "Mean Girls" and "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull." He shared the NBR Award for Best Acting by an Ensemble with the cast of "Magnolia."

Flynn received further recognition for his main role as Mike Heck on the ABC sitcom "The Middle," earning a nomination for the Critics' Choice Television Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. He also starred in the Christian comedy film "The Resurrection of Gavin Stone" and had a main role as Fred Herbert on the NBC sitcom "Abby's." Both the Janitor and Mike Heck reflect aspects of Flynn's personality, and he has noted the challenge of determining which character is more similar to him in real life. Flynn's career is marked by dramatic training, improvisational expertise, and a talent for portraying distinctive characters in comedy and television.
