
Molly Shannon is an actress and comedian renowned for her work on "Saturday Night Live," where she was a cast member from 1995 to 2001. She created memorable characters such as Mary Katherine Gallagher and Sally O’Malley, and in 2000, she was nominated for an Emmy for “Outstanding Individual Performance in a Variety or Music Program.” Notably, Shannon returned to host "Saturday Night Live" on May 12, 2007, after her tenure as a cast member. Her success on the show led to roles in notable films like "Never Been Kissed," "How the Grinch Stole Christmas," "Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby," "Igor," and "Hotel Transylvania." In 2017, Shannon was awarded the Film Independent Spirit Award for “Best Supporting Actress” for her performance in "Other People," a drama written and directed by SNL writer, Chris Kelly. She also received accolades at the Washington D.C. Area Film Critics Association Awards that same year.
Shannon's television roles include stints on "Enlightened," for which she was nominated for an Emmy for outstanding guest actress, "Divorce," "The Other Two," and "The White Lotus." In 2022, she co-starred in the Showtime comedy series "I Love That for You" with Vanessa Bayer. She also appeared in "Only Murders in the Building" in a recurring role as Bev Melon in 2024. Her filmography includes hosting duties such as co-hosting the Rose Parade with Will Ferrell on Amazon Prime Video in 2018, and appearances in Netflix films such as "Private Life" and the comedy "Sextuplets". Shannon will appear in the Amazon MGM comedy "Balls Up" with Mark Wahlberg and Paul Walter Hauser.
Shannon has received numerous awards and honors for her performances, including the Best Actress award at the FilmOut San Diego LGBT Film Festival in 2018 for "Wild Nights with Emily," the Excellence in Acting Award at the Provincetown International Film Festival in 2018, and the Spotlight Award at the Savannah Film Festival in 2016. She was also honored at the Provincetown Film Festival in 2018 and has been a past honored guest at the Savannah Film Festival. In addition to her acting career, Shannon has authored books, with her first children's book, "Tilly the Trickster," released in 2011, and her memoir, "Hello, Molly!: A Memoir," published in 2022.
Originally from Shaker Heights, Ohio, Shannon earned a BFA in drama from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. She currently resides in California with her husband and two children.
