Michael Urie

Michael Urie is an actor, director, and producer whose career spans television, film, and theater. A graduate of Juilliard School, where he earned the John Houseman Prize for Excellence in Classical Theatre and the Laura Pels Award for a career in theater, Urie first gained national attention for his role as Marc St. James on the ABC dramedy "Ugly Betty." He appeared in 85 episodes of the series and 12 episodes of the spin-off "Mode After Hours." The cast received nominations for Screen Actors Guild Awards for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series.

Following "Ugly Betty," Urie built a strong presence on the New York stage. He performed as Alex More in the solo show "Buyer & Cellar" at Barrow Street Theatre, earning a Drama Desk Award and a Lucille Lortel Award. The production later transferred to the Menier Chocolate Factory in London. Urie also originated the role of Rudi Gernreich in the off-Broadway play "The Temperamentals," which explores the early LGBT rights movement and the Mattachine Society, and received a Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Lead Actor. He starred with Patti LuPone in Lincoln Center Theater's production of "Shows for Days" and played Arnold Beckoff in Second Stage Theater's revival of "Torch Song," which transferred to Broadway as "Harvey Fierstein's Torch Song" and earned him a Lucille Lortel Award nomination.

Urie's Broadway credits include "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying," "Spamalot," "Chicken & Biscuits," "Grand Horizons," and "Torch Song." He starred as Prince Dauntless in "Once Upon a Mattress," a musical adaptation by Amy Sherman-Palladino, alongside Sutton Foster, earning a Drama Desk Award and an Outer Critics Award nomination. Additional stage work includes "Richard II" off-Broadway.

On television, Urie has appeared in the Netflix romantic comedy "Single All the Way" and the Apple TV+ dramedy series "Shrinking," for which he received an Emmy nomination and a Critics' Choice Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. He has also guest-starred on the CBS series "Elsbeth." In addition to acting, Urie has worked as a producer, casting director, and theater director, with credits in high school, regional, and off-Broadway productions.

Urie is an advocate for LGBTQ+ representation in the arts and is the co-founder and festival producer of Pride Plays in New York. He has narrated several audiobooks, including the novel "Remarkably Bright Creatures" by Shelby Van Pelt, which was a finalist for the Audie Awards. Urie continues to contribute to the entertainment industry through his work in television, film, theater, and advocacy for queer representation.
