Max Tegmark

Max Tegmark is a Swedish-American physicist, cosmologist, and machine learning researcher whose work addresses fundamental questions in science, including the structure of the cosmos and the future of artificial intelligence. Tegmark is a professor of physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where his research focuses on the physics of intelligence, applying physics-based methods to understand both biological and artificial intelligence. He is affiliated with the MIT Kavli Institute for Astrophysics & Space Research, Physics of Living Systems at MIT, and the NSF AI Institute for Artificial Intelligence and Fundamental Interactions.

Tegmark's research in precision cosmology combines theoretical approaches with observational data to constrain cosmological models and parameters. His contributions to galaxy clustering with the SDSS collaboration were recognized by Science magazine's "Breakthrough of the Year." Tegmark is also known for his work on the mathematical universe hypothesis and the development of multiverse theory, which suggests that reality is a mathematical structure. He has authored more than 300 publications and the New York Times bestsellers "Life 3.0: Being Human in the Age of Artificial Intelligence" and "Our Mathematical Universe: My Quest for the Ultimate Nature of Reality."

Tegmark has founded several nonprofit organizations, including the Future of Life Institute, the Foundational Questions Institute, and the Improve the News Foundation. As president of the Future of Life Institute, he organized the "Pause Giant AI Experiments" open letter and contributed to policy efforts related to the EU AI Act. The Future of Life Institute also released the "Pro-Human AI Declaration," outlining approaches for artificial intelligence to benefit humanity. Tegmark's research in AI safety includes mechanistic interpretability, safe AI systems, and news bias detection using machine learning.

Tegmark has received awards such as the Packard Fellowship, Cottrell Scholar Award, and NSF Career grant, and is a fellow of the American Physical Society. He was awarded the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Science's Gold Medal for contributions to understanding humanity's place in the cosmos and the implications of artificial intelligence. Time recognized Tegmark as one of the 100 most influential people in AI. He has delivered TED Talks, including "How to get empowered, not overpowered, by AI" and "How to keep AI under control," and has appeared in numerous science documentaries. Tegmark continues to be a prominent figure in global discussions on AI governance and safety.
