Mae Martin is a Canadian comedian, actor, writer, and singer-songwriter known for their insightful and humorous explorations of topics such as addiction, sexuality, and gender identity. Born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, they are the child of Canadian writer and teacher Wendy Martin and English actor and musician-turned-food-writer James Chatto.
Martin began their comedy career at the age of 13 as part of the comedy troupe The Young and the Useless. They worked at The Second City comedy club in Toronto, both in the box office and as a stand-up comedian. At 16, they became the youngest-ever nominee for the Tim Sims Encouragement Fund Award.
In 2011, Martin moved to London to further their comedy career. Their 2015 Edinburgh Fringe Festival show, "Mae Martin: Us," led to the BBC Radio 4 series "Mae Martin's Guide to 21st Century Sexuality." In 2017, they debuted "Dope," a show about addiction in all forms, which was shortlisted for the Edinburgh Comedy Award. This show was later adapted into a half-hour Netflix comedy special, released in January 2019 as part of the "Comedians of the World" collection.
Martin co-created, wrote, and starred in the 2020 Channel 4/Netflix comedy series "Feel Good," a semi-autobiographical exploration of love, addiction, and sexuality. The series received critical acclaim, with Martin earning a nomination for the BAFTA TV Award for Best Female Comedy Performance.
In 2023, Martin released their first hour-long stand-up special, "SAP," on Netflix. Directed by Abbi Jacobson, the special revolves around themes of hope and resilience, blending personal stories with playful observations.
Expanding into music, Martin released their debut studio album, "I'm a TV," in February 2025. The album showcases their indie rock influences and features self-written songs produced by Jason Couse and Wes Marskell of the Darcys. That same year, they put out a show, "Wayward," on Netflix, where they created and starred.
In addition to their work in comedy and music, Martin has appeared in various television series, including a recurring role as Grace St. James in the HBO Max series "The Flight Attendant" in 2022. They also participated in and won series 15 of the Channel 4 comedy game show "Taskmaster" in 2023.
Martin publicly came out as non-binary in 2021. They have been open about their experiences with gender identity and sexuality, aiming to foster dialogue and understanding through their work.
