Louis Theroux

Louis Theroux is a British journalist, broadcaster, and author known for his distinctive approach to documentary filmmaking. A graduate of Magdalen College, Oxford, where he earned a first-class degree in modern history, Theroux began his career in print journalism before transitioning to television as a correspondent on Michael Moore's "TV Nation." This early experience led to a longstanding partnership with BBC, starting with the BAFTA-winning series "Louis Theroux's Weird Weekends." In this series, Theroux immersed himself in American subcultures, including survivalists, white supremacists, and the adult film industry, using an interviewing style that revealed the complexities of his subjects' beliefs.

Theroux continued with "When Louis Met...," a series profiling British celebrities in their daily lives. The episode "When Louis Met Jimmy," featuring entertainer Jimmy Savile, gained renewed attention after Savile was posthumously exposed as a sex offender. Theroux revisited the topic in the documentary "Savile." He has produced more than 50 BBC Two specials covering topics such as the American prison system, extremist religious communities in "The Most Hated Family in America," and mental health in "Talking to Anorexia." His feature-length film "My Scientology Movie" explored the Church of Scientology through an inventive investigative approach.

In addition to his television work, Theroux is the author of books including "The Call of the Weird: Travels in American Subcultures" and the memoir "Gotta Get Theroux This: My Life and Strange Times in Television." He founded Mindhouse Productions, an independent production company that has expanded into podcasting with "The Louis Theroux Podcast," a Spotify series featuring conversations with figures from entertainment, journalism, and public life. Mindhouse has produced the Netflix documentary "Can I Tell You a Secret?" and the BBC documentary "The Settlers," in which Theroux examined the Israeli settler movement in the West Bank.

Theroux's documentary "Louis Theroux: Inside the Manosphere" marked his debut as a presenter for Netflix, investigating the online world of hyper-masculine influencers and its impact on young men's attitudes toward gender and identity. Throughout his career, Theroux has received three BAFTA Awards, including the Richard Dimbleby Award for Best Presenter, a Royal Television Society Award, and the Grierson Trustees' Award. His work in investigative journalism, documentary production, and media commentary has established him as a prominent figure in the field, recognized for his ability to address sensitive and polarizing subjects with depth and clarity.
