Jawed Karim

Jawed Karim is an American software engineer and entrepreneur recognized as one of the three co-founders of YouTube, a platform that transformed online video sharing and consumption. Karim began his career at PayPal, where he met fellow co-founders Steve Chen and Chad Hurley. At PayPal, he contributed to the development of core components, including a real-time anti-internet fraud system, which helped establish his reputation in the technology industry.

Karim uploaded the first video to YouTube and created the platform's inaugural channel. The video, titled "Me at the zoo," features Karim at a zoo and is considered a significant moment in internet history. After co-founding YouTube, Karim served as an informal adviser rather than a full-time employee, focusing on further education and taking a smaller equity stake in the company. Following YouTube's acquisition by Google for $1.65 billion, Karim pursued a graduate degree in computer science at Stanford University.

Karim's contributions to YouTube, including features that encouraged community engagement, earned him and his co-founders an Emmy Award for Lifetime Achievement. He has also received the Young Alumni Achievement Award from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and the Global Indus Technovator Award, which recognize significant achievements in technology. Karim became the youngest commencement speaker in the history of the University of Illinois.

Karim co-founded Youniversity Ventures, later renamed Y Ventures, with Kevin Hartz and Keith Rabois. The venture fund supports student-led projects from Stanford University and the University of Illinois. Karim is an early investor in Airbnb and, through Y Ventures, has invested in companies such as Palantir and Eventbrite. He advocates for simple technology solutions to address complex societal challenges, a philosophy reflected in YouTube's user-friendly design and his ongoing work as an investor and mentor in the technology and entrepreneurship sectors.
