Dell Curry

Wardell Stephen Curry Sr., known as Dell Curry, is a former professional basketball player whose 16-season NBA career established him as one of the premier long-range shooters of his era. Curry was a four-year starter at Virginia Tech, where he was named player of the year in the Metro Conference during his senior season. He finished his Virginia Tech career with 2,389 points, ranking second all-time, and 295 steals, the all-time leader in basketball for the school. Curry was also selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the 14th round of the MLB draft but chose to continue his basketball career.

Curry was selected with the 15th overall pick by the Utah Jazz in the NBA draft, played one season in Utah before being traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers, and was then left unprotected for the NBA expansion draft, becoming the first player selected by the Charlotte Hornets. He spent 10 seasons in Charlotte, primarily coming off the bench to provide instant offense with his three-point shooting, and won the NBA Sixth Man of the Year honor. In that award-winning season, he averaged 16.3 points while shooting over 40 percent from three-point range. Curry retired as the Charlotte Hornets' all-time leader in points and three-point field goals made. Over his career, he led the league in three-point percentage three times, finishing with career averages of 11.7 points and a 40.2 percent shooting percentage from beyond the arc.

After brief stints with the Milwaukee Bucks and Toronto Raptors, Curry began working as a commentator for the Charlotte Bobcats, now known as the Charlotte Hornets. He expanded his broadcasting footprint by serving as a game analyst for Amazon Prime Video's NBA coverage. Curry's broadcasting style emphasizes insightful breakdowns of shooting techniques and player development, drawing from his experience as the NBA's Sixth Man of the Year and a career 40-plus percent three-point shooter. His on-air credibility is reinforced by a playing career that was formally honored when the Charlotte Hornets retired his number 30 jersey.

Off the court, Curry established the Dell Curry Foundation, a youth-oriented program in Charlotte, North Carolina, with five learning centers providing educational training and drug abuse counseling. He received the Bobby Jones Award at the Athletes in Action All Star Breakfast, held annually at NBA All Star Weekend. Curry is recognized for his dual induction into the Virginia Tech Sports Hall of Fame and the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame, highlighting his legacy as one of the most accomplished athletes from the state. As the father of NBA players Stephen and Seth Curry, Curry's influence on basketball extends beyond his own playing career, making him a respected voice in the sport at all levels.
