Brett Goldstein—a breakthrough creative force onscreen and off—has emerged as one of Hollywood’s most sought-after multihyphenates: an actor, creator, writer, and producer of incredible range.
He is a series regular, writer and co-executive producer on Apple TV+'s Emmy and Peabody Award-winning comedy series "Ted Lasso," for which Goldstein won the 2021 Emmy Award for ‘Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series’ for his scene-stealing performance as ‘Roy Kent’, as well as two Writers Guild of America Awards as part of the show’s writing team. He most recently received nominations for a 2022 Critics Choice Award and 2022 Golden Globe Award in their respective supporting actor categories.
His work on "Ted Lasso” proved an instant critical and audience favorite upon the show’s launch in August 2020, when the series emerged as a global pop culture phenomenon. Its first season received 20 Emmy Award nominations—a record for a freshman series—and 7 wins including ‘Outstanding Comedy Series’. The series has been showered with countless honors including three Television Critics Association Awards (including ‘Program of the Year’), AFI’s ‘TV Program of the Year’, a Critics Choice Award for ‘Best Comedy Series’, SAG Award Golden Globe prizes, and many more. “Ted Lasso” recently concluded its critically acclaimed second season and has been renewed for a third.
In addition to his individual Emmy win, Goldstein was the recipient of the Hollywood Critics Association Award for ‘Best Supporting Actor in a Streaming Series, Comedy’ and received a Gold Derby Award nomination for ‘Comedy Supporting Actor’; plus, a SAG Award nomination alongside his castmates for 'Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series’.
A key member of the “Ted Lasso” writing team, he received sole writing credit on Episode 105, “Tan Lines,” from the first season, and Episode 206, “The Signal,” from the second; plus, shared credit on Episode 209, “Beard After Hours,” alongside co-writer Joe Kelly. He is currently in the writer’s room on Season 3.
As a creator, it was recently announced that he will co-write and executive produce the upcoming Apple TV+ comedy series “Shrinking” alongside co-creators Jason Segel and Bill Lawrence, which follows a grieving therapist (Segel) who starts to break the rules and tell his clients exactly what he thinks. Goldstein most recently co-created, executive produced and wrote the AMC limited series, “Soulmates,” which debuted in October 2020. The six-part anthology series was set 15 years into the future, when science has made a discovery that changes the lives of everyone on the planet: a test that unequivocally tells you who your soulmate is. He created “Soulmates” alongside Emmy Award winner Will Bridges, and the series starred Sarah Snook, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Bill Skarsgård, Charlie Heaton, Malin Akerman, and Betsy Brandt.
A fixture for UK audiences on screen, he starred in and co-wrote the 2015 cult-favorite superhero comedy, “SuperBob,” in which a Peckham postman develops superpowers after having been hit by a meteorite; and won the 2016 British Independent Film Award for ‘Best Supporting Actor’ for his performance in the acclaimed indie feature “Adult Life Skills” from filmmaker Rachel Tunnard, which premiered at the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival. On television, he was a series regular on Ricky Gervais's Emmy-nominated "Derek," and co-starred and wrote on popular UK series “Drifters,” “Hoff the Record,” “Uncle,” and “Undercover.” He has also guest-starred on “Drunk History UK” and “Doctor Who,” among countless others.
Also a gifted standup comedian, he began performing in comedy clubs in 2006, and since then has toured extensively across the UK, creating and performing original one-man shows. He remains very connected to his comedy roots, and continues to perform in comedy clubs across London, Los Angeles, and more.
Goldstein also hosts a podcast, 'Films To Be Buried With', which recently celebrated over 2 million streams and was nominated for a 2022 iHeartRadio Podcast Award in the ‘Podcast to Watch' category. Each episode finds him in candid conversation with a special guest as they discuss the films that have shaped them. Notable guests have included Oscar winners Barry Jenkins and Emerald Fennell, British creative forces Russell T. Davies and Edgar Wright, and his “Ted Lasso” co-star Hannah Waddington, among many others.
He received his degree in Film Studies from Warwick University, and then studied acting at the American Academy of Dramatic Art in New York City. Goldstein currently resides in London.
