Tony Goldwyn Biography
Tony Goldwyn is an actor, director, and producer whose career spans five decades across film, television, and stage. The grandson of Paramount Pictures chief and MGM namesake Samuel Goldwyn, Tony Goldwyn began in theater before transitioning to television and film. He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Brandeis University and trained at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. Goldwyn's breakthrough film role came as Carl Bruner in "Ghost," earning a Saturn Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. He went on to appear in films such as "The Pelican Brief" with Julia Roberts and Denzel Washington, "Kiss the Girls," Oliver Stone's "Nixon," and "The Last Samurai" opposite Tom Cruise. He is also known to younger audiences as the title voice in Disney's animated feature "Tarzan."
Goldwyn starred as President Fitzgerald Grant III on the ABC drama "Scandal," a Shonda Rhimes-created political drama, throughout its seven-season run. He also directed nine episodes of the series. Goldwyn's work on "Scandal" highlighted his experience in both acting and directing within the television industry. He later appeared alongside Will Smith in "King Richard," with the ensemble earning a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. Goldwyn joined the ensemble cast of Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer" as government official Gordon Gray, a film that received multiple Academy Award nominations.
As a director, Goldwyn made his feature debut with "A Walk on the Moon" starring Diane Lane and Viggo Mortensen, which premiered at Sundance Film Festival and received the National Board of Review Award for Excellence in Independent Filmmaking. His directing credits include "The Last Kiss," based on Gabriele Muccino's "L'Ultimo Bacio," for which he received Best Director from the Boston Film Festival, and the romantic comedy "Someone Like You." Goldwyn directed and produced "Conviction," starring Hilary Swank and Sam Rockwell, a film that earned Swank a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination, won Best Film at the Boston Film Festival, and received a Freedom of Expression honor from the National Board of Review. He also co-created and executive produced the series "The Divide" for AMC Studios.
Goldwyn joined the cast of "Law & Order" as Manhattan District Attorney Nicholas Baxter, contributing to one of television's longest-running franchises. On stage, he completed a run of director Ivo Van Hove's Broadway production of "Network" with Bryan Cranston and Tatiana Maslany. In addition to his creative work, Goldwyn is an advocate for social justice, serving as a board member and Innocence Ambassador for the Innocence Project, an ambassador for Stand Up To Cancer, and a trustee for Second Stage Theater and the Innocence Project. Goldwyn's career reflects a commitment to acting, directing, and advocacy within the entertainment industry.
