Detailed Biography of Mike Keenan
|

|
A coaching veteran in his 15th season, Keenan has coached six other NHL franchises - the Philadelphia Flyers (1984-88), the Chicago Blackhawks (1988-92), the New York Rangers (1993-94), the St. Louis Blues (1994-96), the Vancouver Canucks (1997-98) and the Boston Bruins (2000-01).
Prior to joining the Panthers, Keenan coached the Bruins in 2000-01, taking over for Pat Burns after just eight games and posting a record of 33-34-7 (.493 winning pct.). Before joining the Bruins, Keenan's most recent coaching stint came in Vancouver, where he piloted the Canucks to a 36-54-18 mark over parts of two seasons. He spent three seasons with the Blues before joining Vancouver, leading St. Louis to a record of 75-66-22 (.528) in the regular season and 10-10 (.500) in two playoff appearances.
Keenan led the New York Rangers to the Stanley Cup Championship in 1994, the team's first championship in 54 years. The Rangers went 52-24-8 (.667) under Keenan in 1993-94, and won a thrilling seven-game Stanley Cup Final over the Vancouver Canucks, finishing 16-7 (.695) in the playoffs that year.
Keenan's Stanley Cup season in New York followed four successful seasons at the helm of the Chicago Blackhawks. In four seasons with Chicago, Keenan posted a mark of 153-126-41 (.542), leading the 'Hawks to the Stanley Cup Finals in 1992. His Chicago teams made the playoffs all four years, finishing 33-27 (.550) in the postseason and winning seven of 11 playoff series. His NHL coaching career began with the Philadelphia Flyers, a team which he guided for four seasons, leading them to a mark of 190-102-28 (.683) and two appearances in the Stanley Cup Finals (1985 and 1987). He also won the Jack Adams Award as the NHL's Coach of the Year in 1985. His Philadelphia teams went 32-25 (.561) in the playoffs, reaching the postseason all four years of his tenure. The Flyers won six of 10 playoff series under Keenan.
His outstanding resume includes three Presidents' Trophies (1985, 1991 and 1994), six division titles (1985, 1986, 1987, 1990, 1991 and 1994), three 50-plus-win seasons (1984-85, 1985-86 and 1993-94) and five 100-plus point seasons (1984-85, 1985-86, 1986-87, 1990-91 and 1993-94).
In addition to his coaching duties, Keenan has acted as Interim General Manager for Vancouver, and as General Manager in Chicago and St. Louis. As National Team Head Coach in 1987 and in his dual role as General Manager and Head Coach in 1991, Keenan led Team Canada to two Canada Cup victories. His international career also includes head coaching jobs with Team Canada at the 1980 World Junior Championships and the World Championships in 1993.
An accomplished coach at all levels of hockey, Keenan guided the Peterborough Petes (OHL) to the Memorial Cup Finals in 1980, then took the Rochester Americans (AHL) to a Calder Cup win in 1983 and led the University of Toronto to a CIAU Championship in 1984.
