Lou Diamond Phillips is an American actor, director, and writer known for his versatility across film, television, stage, and literature. Phillips earned recognition in pop culture with his breakthrough role as Ritchie Valens in the biographical drama film "La Bamba." The film chronicled the brief career of the first Mexican-American rock star, who died in a plane crash along with Buddy Holly, and received positive reviews, with many noting the dedication of Phillips's performance. This role established him as a leading man capable of carrying major studio films.

Phillips continued to build his career with a series of acclaimed projects. He co-starred with Edward James Olmos in the inner-city high school drama "Stand and Deliver," a role that earned him the Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Male and a nomination for the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor – Motion Picture. He also appeared alongside Emilio Estevez and Kiefer Sutherland in the Western film "Young Guns," portraying José Chávez y Chávez. Other notable films include "Young Guns II," "Courage Under Fire," "The Big Hit," "Brokedown Palace," "Che," and "The 33."

Phillips has worked across multiple mediums and genres. He made his Broadway debut as the King in Rodgers and Hammerstein's "The King and I," winning a Theatre World Award and earning nominations for both a Tony Award and a Drama Desk Award. He later reprised the role in Opera Australia's Melbourne production of "The King and I." On television, Phillips played Henry Standing Bear in the series "Longmire" and New York City Police Lieutenant Gil Arroyo on "Prodigal Son" on FOX. He received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Actor in a Short Form Drama or Comedy for his roles in both Amazon's "Conversations in LA" and History Channel's "Crossroads of History."

In addition to acting, Phillips has directed episodes of FOX's "The Cleaning Lady" and "Prodigal Son," AMC's "Fear the Walking Dead," "Longmire," and ABC's Marvel's "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." He is also the author of the novel "The Tinderbox: Soldier of Indira," illustrated by his wife Yvonne. Phillips continues to write and develop projects, including animated series. He was honored with the DIFF Dallas Star Award by the Dallas International Film Festival, and his voice can be heard in the animated spinoff "Stranger Things: Tales from '85" on Netflix. With a career spanning four decades, Phillips is recognized for his contributions to acting, directing, and writing in the entertainment industry.
