Stand-Up Comedian, Writer & Actor; Podcast Host of the Library of Congress-Preserved "WTF with Marc Maron"
Marc Maron Biography
Marc Maron is a stand-up comedian, actor, writer, and a significant figure in the history of podcasting. For more than three decades, Maron has written and performed comedy across print, stage, radio, online, and television platforms. His comedy blends self-deprecation, acerbic wit, philosophy, and socio-political commentary.
Between 1994 and 2008, Maron became one of Late Night with Conan O'Brien's most frequent guests, appearing more than 30 times. He also made his mark on radio as a regular on Air America, hosting "The Marc Maron Show" and co-hosting "Morning Sedition" and "Breakroom Live."
Maron began recording his podcast, "WTF with Marc Maron," during a transitional period in his career. Each episode typically opened with a monologue before transitioning into a long-form interview, initially with fellow comedians and later expanding to include performers, writers, directors, and musicians. "WTF with Marc Maron" achieved more than 600 million downloads and featured interviews with Robin Williams, Keith Richards, Nicole Kidman, Paul McCartney, and former U.S. President Barack Obama. The New York Times noted Maron's interview with Obama as a unique moment in podcasting history. The episode with Robin Williams became the first one-on-one podcast episode to enter America's National Recording Registry. The Library of Congress recognized Maron's influence on legitimizing the podcast medium and documenting American culture.
The podcast was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the U.S. National Recording Registry and led Maron to receive the first Governors Award from the Podcast Academy for Excellence in Audio. He was also named one of the 50 Best Stand-up Comics by Rolling Stone. Maron's stand-up specials include "More Later," "Thinky Pain," "Too Real," and "End Times Fun," which was nominated for a Critics' Choice Award for Best Comedy Special. His special "From Bleak to Dark" was named New York magazine's No. 1 Best Comedy Special.
In addition to podcasting and stand-up, Maron has built a substantial acting career. He starred in the Netflix series "GLOW," earning multiple award nominations, and in his scripted series "Maron" on IFC, where he also served as executive producer and occasional writer. His film credits include "Joker," "Spencer Confidential," "Sword of Trust," "Stardust," the Aretha Franklin biopic "Respect," and the DreamWorks animated feature "The Bad Guys." Maron has also appeared in the Apple TV+ series "Stick" and played landlord Gideon Perlman in the Amazon series "The Horror of Dolores Roach." He is the author of the books "The Jerusalem Syndrome: My Life as a Reluctant Messiah" and "Attempting Normal." In 2026, he starred in "In Memoriam."
"WTF with Marc Maron" became a medium-defining show known for its thoughtful, probing interviews with cultural figures. Maron's influence extends beyond performance, shaping a generation of comedians and podcasters with his authentic, self-revealing style. After nearly 2,000 episodes, Maron concluded "WTF with Marc Maron," which produced more than 1,600 episodes and attracted 55 million listens annually. Maron's ongoing creative output continues to contribute to American comedy, podcasting, and entertainment.
