James Gregory Biography

James Gregory, known for his self-proclaimed title "The Funniest Man in America," was an American stand-up comedian recognized for his enduring presence in Southern comedy. Before entering the comedy industry, Gregory worked for the Department of Defense, the United States Postal Service, and spent nearly a decade as a salesperson. Encouraged by friends, he began his stand-up career at age 36 with an open mic night at the Punchline Comedy Club in Atlanta, where he became the first act to perform on its stage.

Gregory's comedic style centered on storytelling, offering a front-porch brand of humor rooted in everyday Southern life. He addressed topics ranging from health trends to animal rights, appealing to audiences seeking clean, relatable comedy. Gregory's performances were known for their absence of vulgarity and focus on carefully crafted stories. His grassroots following included millions of fans who regularly tuned in to radio shows such as Rick & Bubba, John Boy & Billy, Steve & DC, and Bob & Tom.

Among his notable works are the album and book "It Could Be A Law, I Don't Know," the video "Grease, Gravy & John Wayne's Momma," and "Crock Pots & Chicken Legs," which explored food and family dynamics inspired by Southern cooking traditions. His Dry Bar Comedy production, "Food Is Not Fatal," delved into eating habits and regional cuisine, with routines on vertigo, local foods, and daily indulgences. Gregory's autobiography, "A Bushel of Beans and a Peck of Tomatoes: The Life and Times of the Funniest Man in America," was published posthumously.

Gregory performed for numerous corporations, including Coca-Cola Company, Kimberly Clark Corporation, Hewlett Packard, and Kroger. He maintained a rigorous touring schedule, performing in theaters and comedy clubs and appearing at corporate events. Gregory also shared the stage with artists such as Kenny Chesney, Randy Travis, Reba McEntire, The Judds, George Jones, and Ricky Skaggs. His work was featured in Atlanta Magazine, Country America, Music City News, Laugh Track, Backstage West, Southern Living, Goodness Magazine, and major newspapers across the South.

Gregory died from cardiac complications at age 78. Over more than four decades, he established a legacy in stand-up comedy through his authentic, clean, and relatable humor, demonstrating the lasting appeal of Southern storytelling and observational comedy.
