Mental Health & Men's Wellness Advocate; Author of "Right My Dudes... Now What? Being a Man in the 21st Century Without Being a Dick."; Former New Mexico Secretary of Workforce Solutions; Trades Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Expert
Bill McCamley Biography
Bill McCamley is a former politician from Las Cruces, New Mexico. McCamley earned a bachelor's degree in government from New Mexico State University and a master's degree in public policy from Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government, with a focus on negotiation strategy.
At 25, McCamley was elected to the Doña Ana County Commission and then spent more than 20 years in elected and appointed office. McCamley represented District 33 in the New Mexico House of Representatives from 2013 to 2018, and in 2019 McCamley was appointed secretary of the New Mexico Department of Workforce Solutions, the state's labor department. In that role, McCamley led the state's response to workforce challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic, including the distribution of billions of dollars in unemployment funds and the expansion of apprenticeship programs.
McCamley resigned from that post in 2021 after a suicide attempt and numerous safety concerns following threats of violence, a car bombing, and the public gaining access to his mother's personal address.
In 2021 McCamley moved to Austin, where he spent more than three years serving as executive director of Transit Forward, a nonprofit advocating for expansion of Austin's bus and rail network and denser, more affordable housing.
Returning to New Mexico in 2025, McCamley has focused his time on issues affecting men, with an emphasis on mental health. McCamley is the author of, "Right My Dudes... Now What? Being a Man in the 21st Century Without Being a Dick," and is contracted with the New Mexico and Texas Building Trades Councils to program suicide prevention, substance use, and overall mental health programs for trades workers. This profession has some of the highest death by suicide and overdose rates in the nation.

Hard Hats, Heavy Burdens: Mental Health, Suicide Prevention & Substance Abuse in the Building Trades
The building trades hurt. We have one of the most physically demanding professions in the world, but invisible hazards are even more deadly. Our workers are 16 times more likely to die from suicide or drug overdose than a workplace accident, yet mental health remains one of the most under addressed safety issues in any crew.
My talk takes our workers’ mental health crisis head-on, examining the unique pressures they face; including physical pain, job insecurity, workplace culture, the pressure of golden handcuffs, and most importantly the stigma in asking for help. By reframing mental health as a core safety issue workers, foremen, and contractors can recognize warning signs, break our silence, and build a culture where no worker is left behind.
Three Key Takeaways:
- Mental health IS a safety issue. Suicide and substance abuse claim more trades workers than jobsite accidents. Prevention starts with awareness.
- Stigma costs lives. Changing our culture to normalize conversations about mental health is as critical as any safety protocol.
- Help is a tool, not a weakness. Attendees will leave with practical resources and actionable steps to support themselves and their crews.

How to Talk to Men About Mental Health... and Actually Reaching Them
For men under 45 in America, the leading cause of death is not cancer, not heart disease, not an accident caused by someone else. It's ourselves... through drug overdose, suicide, and risky driving. I open with that hard fact and dear on the frontline work I do embedding behavioral health programming inside the building trades,
The central insight is that male pain isn't communicated in the way our mental health infrastructure expects. It doesn't usually arrive as tears or "I'm sad." It shows up as irritability, anger, drinking, "stress," physical complaints, risk-taking, and working until the body gives out. When boys are asked what vulnerability means, many answer with a single word: weakness. Until we account for that, we'll keep building help that the men who need it most will never walk toward.
What audiences take away:
- Why male distress is real but often invisible, and the specific signs to watch for instead of tears and talk.
- A practical translation guide for reframing mental health as strength, challenge, and teamwork.
- Four field-tested moves for reaching men who will never raise their hand voluntarily.
- Honest, current data on gambling, porn, and AI companionship as emerging drivers of male loneliness and risk.
- A peer-first model for building support that men will actually use.
