Tiya Miles Biography

Tiya Miles is the Michael Garvey Professor of History and Radcliffe Alumnae Professor at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study. As a public historian, academic historian, and creative writer, Miles focuses on the intersections of African American, Native American, and women's histories, particularly in the context of place. Her research centers on the nineteenth-century U.S. South, Midwest, and West. Miles teaches courses on slavery and public history, women's history and literature, Black and Indigenous histories, and environmental humanities. Her scholarship increasingly addresses ecological questions, environmental storytelling, and African American environmental consciousness.

Miles is the author of eight books and a two-time recipient of the Frederick Douglass Prize for the study of slavery, abolition, and resistance. Her book, "All That She Carried: The Journey of Ashley's Sack, a Black Family Keepsake," received multiple honors, including the National Book Award for Nonfiction, the Cundill History Prize, the Darlene Clark Hine Award for African American women's and gender history, the Lawrence W. Levine Award for cultural history from the Organization of American Historians, the Joan Kelly Memorial Prize for women's and gender history from the American Historical Association, the National Council on Public History book prize, and the PEN John Kenneth Galbraith Award for Nonfiction. "All That She Carried" was a New York Times bestseller and was recognized as one of the Ten Best Books of the Year by The Washington Post, Slate, Vulture, and Publishers Weekly, as well as one of the Best Books of the Year by the New York Times, NPR, Time, The Boston Globe, The Atlantic, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Smithsonian Magazine, Book Riot, Library Journal, Kirkus Reviews, and Booklist. Miles has also received the American Historical Association Equity Award for her mentorship and commitment to diversifying the historical profession.

Her previous works include "Wild Girls: How the Outdoors Shaped the Women Who Challenged a Nation," "The Dawn of Detroit: A Chronicle of Bondage and Freedom in the City of the Straits," "Ties That Bind: The Story of an Afro-Cherokee Family in Slavery and Freedom," "The House on Diamond Hill: A Cherokee Plantation Story," "Tales from the Haunted South: Dark Tourism and Memories of Slavery from the Civil War Era," and the historical novel "The Cherokee Rose: A Novel of Gardens and Ghosts." Miles's scholarly articles and essays examine nineteenth-century women's resistance, Black and Native histories and literatures, public histories of plantations, and environmental histories. She co-edited "Crossing Waters, Crossing Worlds: The African Diaspora in Indian Country" with Sharon P. Holland.

Her book "Night Flyer: Harriet Tubman and the Faith Dreams of a Free People" has been recognized as a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award in Biography and the PEN America Literary Award, and was named a Washington Post Notable Book and one of Smithsonian Magazine's Ten Best History Books of the Year.

Miles has consulted for the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Eiteljorg Museum in Indianapolis, and the Chief Vann House State Historic Site in Georgia. She is a recipient of a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and the Hiett Prize in the Humanities from the Dallas Institute of Humanities and Culture. Miles is an elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Her work has been supported by the Mellon Foundation and the National Endowment for the Humanities. Her ongoing projects include biographies of Harriet Tubman, Harriet Jacobs, and Harriet Beecher Stowe, as well as an environmental history of American girlhood.

Miles was born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio. She holds an AB in Afro-American Studies from Harvard University, an MA in Women's Studies from Emory University, and a PhD in American Studies from the University of Minnesota. She taught at the University of Michigan for sixteen years, where she served as chair of the Department of Afroamerican & African Studies, director of the Native American Studies Program, and founding director of ECO Girls (Environmental & Cultural Opportunities for Girls in Urban Southeast Michigan).
