Eugene Brave Rock Biography

Eugene Brave Rock is a Blackfoot actor and stuntman from the Blood First Nation of the Blackfoot Confederacy. His traditional name, Natoiyiipiita, means Holy Eagle. Brave Rock is a member of the Kainai Nation (Blood Tribe) reserve in southern Alberta, Canada, and is an advocate for Indigenous language preservation. He attended the Plains Indian Cultural Survival School in Calgary, where he secured his first role in a play. Brave Rock further developed his skills as part of Disney's Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show, performing singing, dancing, and stunts in the production. This experience led to opportunities on stages at Disneyland Paris and in Hollywood film and television.

After returning to Calgary, Brave Rock worked on several television productions as a stuntman and actor, with roles in "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee," "Heartland," "Blackstone," and "Hell on Wheels." He also established a boot camp for Native American stunt performers featured in the Academy Award-winning film "The Revenant." These projects contributed to his career development and led to his breakthrough role in "Wonder Woman," where he portrayed the Chief. In this role, Brave Rock brought Blackfoot language and culture to the big screen, consulting on character development and costume design. He also appeared in AMC's "Dark Winds."

Brave Rock's work in "Wonder Woman" had a significant impact on Indigenous representation in film, particularly for Indigenous audiences who recognized the importance of hearing their language in a major motion picture. This experience inspired him to found the Oki Language Project, a nonprofit organization dedicated to documenting and celebrating greetings and common phrases in Indigenous languages. Brave Rock has traveled extensively to connect with Indigenous elders and support the preservation of Native American languages. The Oki Language Project focuses on honoring elders and preserving the languages and cultures of Indigenous communities across North America. The advisory council for the project includes director Chris Eyre, actor Kiowa Gordon, actor Zahn McClarnon, actor Wes Studi, and singer Taboo.

Brave Rock has also contributed to academic and public discussions on Indigenous representation and language preservation. He has served as a guest speaker at the University of Pennsylvania on Representation, Symbolization and Indigeneity and at Princeton University on The Arts of Anti-Racism and Social Justice. Drawing from more than 20 years in film and television, his personal experiences, and his work with the Oki Language Project, Brave Rock explores the connections between language, identity, storytelling, leadership, and resilience. His career reflects a commitment to Indigenous representation, cultural preservation, and storytelling in the entertainment industry.
