Philosopher of Technology & AI Ethics Expert; Baillie Gifford Chair at University of Edinburgh; Author of "Technology and the Virtues"
Shannon Vallor Biography
Shannon Vallor is a philosopher of technology and an authority on the ethics of artificial intelligence. Vallor holds the Baillie Gifford Chair in the Ethics of Data and Artificial Intelligence at the University of Edinburgh and directs the Centre for Technomoral Futures at the Edinburgh Futures Institute. Her work examines how emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, robotics, and data science, transform human character, moral reasoning, and civic life. Vallor previously served as a visiting AI ethicist at Google and has held academic and leadership roles in the United States focused on the ethics of emerging technologies.
Vallor's research is situated at the intersection of classical philosophy and contemporary technology. She is the author of "Technology and the Virtues: A Philosophical Guide to a Future Worth Wanting," which addresses ethical challenges posed by artificial intelligence and automation through the lens of classical philosophy. Her book "The AI Mirror: How to Reclaim Our Humanity in an Age of Machine Thinking" explores the ethical implications, benefits, and challenges of artificial intelligence. Vallor also edited "The Oxford Handbook of Philosophy of Technology."
Vallor is engaged in integrating ethics with technical practice in industry and computer science, working with stakeholders in government, industry, law, media, and public policy. She is a standing member of the One Hundred Year Study of Artificial Intelligence (AI100), serves on the Oversight Board of the Ada Lovelace Institute, is a Fellow of the Alan Turing Institute, and is Co-Director of the UKRI BRAID program.
Vallor has received recognition for her contributions to technology ethics, including the World Technology Award in Ethics from the World Technology Network, the Covey Award from the International Association of Computing and Philosophy, and the University of Edinburgh's Chancellor's Award for Research. She has served as president of the Society for Philosophy and Technology and as co-director and secretary of the board of the Foundation for Responsible Robotics, an organization advocating for ethical design and production of robots.
Vallor has delivered keynote addresses and lectures internationally, emphasizing that artificial intelligence technologies reflect human data and should be designed to strengthen, rather than replace, human thinking. She has appeared on C-SPAN and spoken at Harvard Bookstore, discussing how artificial intelligence mirrors human flaws due to its reliance on human data. Vallor's work centers on the question of how technology can be reclaimed as a moral practice to help create desirable futures.
