Her Royal Highness Princess Rym Ali is a former international journalist, educator, and institution-builder whose career has included work with major global news organizations and coverage of significant world events. Princess Rym holds a Bachelor of Arts in geography and a Master of Arts in English literature from Sorbonne University in Paris, a Master of Philosophy in political science from Institut d'Études Politiques de Paris, and a master's degree from Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, with a concentration in international reporting.

Prior to her royal life, Princess Rym worked for international broadcasters including CNN, where she began as a producer and later served as a Baghdad correspondent. She also contributed to BBC, Dubai TV, Bloomberg TV, Radio Monte-Carlo Moyen-Orient, and United Press International. Her reporting at CNN, particularly in Baghdad, shaped her perspective on the journalist's responsibility to report truthfully and ethically.

Princess Rym founded the Jordan Media Institute, a non-profit organization dedicated to establishing an Arab center of excellence for journalism education, featuring a master's program and specialized training modules. Her goal was to create an institution recognized globally while remaining rooted in local needs and cultural context, setting a new standard for journalism education in the Arab world. Under her leadership, the institute has educated more than 600 journalists from Jordan and internationally. Its graduates hold key roles in media outlets across Jordan, Palestine, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and other countries. The institute has adapted to the digital era by incorporating courses on artificial intelligence and data journalism into its curriculum.

A strong advocate for media literacy, Princess Rym has contributed to Jordan's emergence as a regional leader in this field. The Jordan Media Institute developed the National Agency for Media Literacy, which has been adopted by the Jordanian government and integrated into the national school curriculum. The institute's projects address issues such as human rights, gender equality, and combating hate speech, including through its fact-checking website, Akeed.jo. Princess Rym has spoken about the importance of media literacy, drawing on her experience as a war correspondent and the challenges of misinformation.

Princess Rym's work in journalism and media has been recognized with numerous international honors. She received an Alumni Award from Columbia University School of Journalism, the Best International Journalist prize at the Ischia International Journalism Awards Ceremony in Italy, and the French Knight of the Legion of Honor decoration. The Global Thinkers Forum awarded her the Excellence in Media Award, and she received a Ph.D. honoris causa from Coventry University in England for her contributions to journalism and media and as founder of the Jordan Media Institute. She has served as a member of the Board of Commissioners of the Royal Film Commission – Jordan and as president of the Amman International Film Festival AIFF Awal Film. Through her work at the Royal Film Commission, she has supported the development of young filmmakers and scriptwriters in Jordan. The Anna Lindh Foundation, which promotes intercultural dialogue in the Euro-Mediterranean region, appointed Princess Rym as president, reinforcing her influence in media, democracy, and cross-cultural understanding in the Arab world.

We were told by many that Facebook and Twitter were bringing democracy to the Arab world.

As a former journalist, I am acutely aware of the role that the media plays in a democracy. As the Founder of an NGO that depends on funding for projects, I also hear the word democracy thrown around at almost every project proposal, aimed at “building democracy.”

As an educator, I know that democracy doesn’t happen in well-intended projects, or over Facebook, or Twitter. Democracy comes as the result of having built a culture of democracy. And that begins in school.

I stepped into the newly designed control room, an entire wall panel of little screens, each showing a different video. My host proudly explained to me what the future of news was going to look like – and his company had the technology: the personalization of information and programmes has been coming to us for years. But what does that mean for humanity when we no longer share information or certain interpretations of this shared reality? How do you make the case for Climate Change and urge fellow humans to do what is right by Mother Earth if part of the world’s population doesn’t share the same awareness about the issue?
Does Today’s Overload Of Information Make Us Wiser?

As I watch today’s teens juggle learning and sharing through their fingertips, I can’t help but wonder how their understanding of the world compares to ours at their age.

They can, if they want, access the same amount of information I can today, as quickly -maybe even faster because they are more digitally literate: before I even step out of the house, I have read a variety of news articles of my own choosing and opened links sent to me on various topics that have to do with everything from how to be a parent to how to make a given recipe to why the price of fuel is up again and who is winning in the war in Ukraine – courtesy of the great algorithms that rule my on-screen life.

In many ways, that means our teenagers and we are just as wise.

But among all that information my brain downloaded, how much of it have I truly absorbed so it is useful? Maybe being wiser is about knowing how to use that information. Have my teens learned that too?

If the Pandemic taught us anything, it is that we do not exist as individuals in a vacuum.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights tells us we have rights as individuals, and we do, of course.

The African Union’s Charter of Human and People’s Rights reminds us that the enjoyment of our rights is tied to the performance and duties of all our fellow humans.

Or, as Nelson Mandela famously said, that none of us are free until all of us are free.
