Maria Elvira Salazar Biography

Her journalistic debut began in 1983 as a general assignment reporter for Channel 23. Only one year later, she became one of the first reporters for the National News in Spanish television in the U.S. for the Spanish International Network, which later became Univision. During a three year period at Univision, she covered the civil war in El Salvador as the executive reporter for the Central American bureau as well as the international correspondent for the White House and Pentagon. In 1988 C.N.N. in Spanish was established. As such, Maria Elvira became the anchor for the world’s first ranked Spanish news station. Twenty years of her career were spent establishing herself as a trustworthy reporter and expert in Latin American affairs. In September of 2002, she left Telemundo and continued her career as a journalist with America TV 41 with her own show, “Maria Elvira Confronta.” This program gained enormous prestige in Florida. Later, in 2003, she moved to channel 22 where she changed the dynamic of her show, moving to a program involving more political debates about current affairs. In 2006, Mr. Raul Alarcon, owner of Spanish Broadcasting System (SBS), purchased channel 22, and the channel is now known as Mega TV. She then changed the name of the program to “Polo Opuestos” under the new owners. She has maintained the debate dynamic of her show, but as of July 31, 2006, she renamed the program Maria Elvira Live!. The change of name ushered in a new era for Maria Elvira as far as production in concerned. She independently produces the show for Mega TV, based in an original journalistic format, the only of its kind in Spanish TV. Maria Elvira Live! airs at 8pm EST on Mega TV, with her studio located in Miami, Florida. Mega TV distributes her program across the U.S. and Puerto Rico though Direct TV.

Specialties:As a reporter, she has obtained a number of interviews with prestigious people from all corners of the globe including American presidents Bill Clinton (1999) and George W. Bush (2001), President Alvaro Uribe (2008) and world icons like Mother Teresa of Calcuta.
