Rashid Khalidi Biography
Rashid Khalidi is the Edward Said Professor of Modern Arab Studies Emeritus at Columbia University, where he served as chair of the History Department and director of the Middle East Institute, and co-founded the Center for Palestine Studies. Khalidi has also taught at Lebanese University, American University of Beirut, Georgetown University, and University of Chicago, where he directed the Middle East Center and the Center for International Studies. His academic work focuses on Arab nationalism, Palestinian history, modern Middle Eastern history, and the Cold War.
Khalidi has authored more than 120 scholarly articles and book chapters on Middle Eastern history and politics, as well as numerous opinion pieces and op-eds. He is the author of eight books, including "The Hundred Years' War on Palestine: A History of Settler Colonialism and Resistance, 1917–2017," which received the MEMO Palestine Book Award; "Brokers of Deceit: How the U.S. Has Undermined Peace in the Middle East"; and "Sowing Crisis: American Dominance and the Cold War in the Middle East." His earlier works include "Palestinian Identity: The Construction of Modern National Consciousness," "The Iron Cage: The Story of the Palestinian Struggle for Statehood," and "Resurrecting Empire: Western Footprints and America's Perilous Path in the Middle East." Khalidi's writing has appeared in The New York Times, Financial Times, The Boston Globe, Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, and London Review of Books.
Khalidi's honors include the Frantz Fanon Lifetime Achievement Award from the Caribbean Philosophical Association, the WOCMES Seville Award for Outstanding Contributions to Middle Eastern Studies, and the Lionel Trilling Book Award for "Brokers of Deceit." He has received fellowships and grants from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, Ford Foundation, Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, American Research Center in Egypt, and Rockefeller Foundation.
Khalidi served as editor of Journal of Palestine Studies, was president of the Middle East Studies Association, and acted as an advisor to the Palestinian delegation to the Madrid and Washington Arab-Israeli peace negotiations. He also served as president of the American Committee on Jerusalem. Khalidi has appeared on radio and television programs including All Things Considered, Talk of the Nation, Morning Edition, The NewsHour, The Charlie Rose Show, GPS with Fareed Zakaria, Amanpour on CNN International, and Nightline, as well as BBC, Radio France Inter and France Culture, CBC, al-Jazeera, al-Arabiyya, Russia Today, and Voice of America.
Khalidi continues to contribute to public discourse as a historian and commentator on Middle East history, Palestinian studies, and international relations. He has delivered lectures at Georgetown University as the Kareema Khoury Memorial Lecturer and participated in academic discussions at American University in Cairo, focusing on "The Hundred Years' War on Palestine" and the broader historical context of colonialism and resistance in the region. Khalidi is recognized for his rigorous historical scholarship and engagement with contemporary issues in Middle Eastern studies.
