Raymond Ablack Biography

Raymond Ablack is a Canadian actor and comedian of Indo-Guyanese descent whose career spans stage, television, and film. His professional acting debut came at age 11, when he was cast as Young Simba in the stage production of "The Lion King" at Toronto's Princess of Wales Theatre, a role he performed throughout a one-year run that contributed to developing his stage presence and confidence as a performer. He attended Ryerson University, completing a four-year Bachelor of Arts in radio and television, media production with an English minor, and also studied stand-up comedy and improvisation at The Second City in Toronto.

Ablack achieved international exposure when he was cast in the recurring role of Sav Bhandari on the Canadian television series "Degrassi: The Next Generation," starring on the series for several years and appearing in more than 100 episodes. The role introduced him to a global fanbase. Since his time on "Degrassi," Ablack worked on several film and television productions, including recurring roles in the BBC/Space television series "Orphan Black," the Syfy series "Defiance," and the Freeform series "Shadowhunters." He also played the recurring role of DEA Agent Stoddard in the Netflix series "Narcos."

From 2014 to 2017, Ablack starred in the web series "Teenagers," winning an Indie Series Award for his performance. For his work in the third and final season, he was nominated for an International Academy of Web Television Award and a second Indie Series Award. He also appeared alongside Zoey Deutch, Judy Greer, and Jermaine Fowler in the American comedy-drama film "Buffaloed," which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival.

Ablack played a supporting role in the Netflix miniseries "Maid," and his performance attracted attention on social media, with Marie Claire noting his popularity among Netflix viewers. He has also starred as Joe, a restaurant owner and one of the main love interests, on the Netflix comedy-drama series "Ginny & Georgia." He continued in the role for subsequent seasons. Ablack was also cast in the Netflix romantic comedy feature film "Love in the Villa."

In addition to his acting work, Ablack has written and performed stand-up comedy in Toronto throughout his career. He has expanded into filmmaking, co-writing and producing the short comedy "Inside the Actors Cult," which won honors at the Canada Shorts Film Festival for Best Comedy and Best Writer. Ablack has also participated in charity work, including school-building missions with Me to We and Free the Children. His career reflects a versatile range across drama, comedy, and romance, establishing him as a dynamic Canadian actor in television and film.
