Dr. Ala Stanford Biography
Ala Stanford, MD is the founder of It Takes Philly and Black Doctors COVID-19 Consortium.
In 2014 Standford founded It Takes Philly as an extension of her commitment to our most vulnerable and impressionable citizens. It Takes Philly was created to support inner-city youth and expose children to professions that exist within and outside of their communities, to show them that professional people and members of society are invested and care about their future.
Stanford spent the early days of the pandemic trying to provide COVID-19 tests to the area’s communities of color. She became aware that many testing sites were located exclusively in “affluent white neighborhoods” so, with a rented van and PPE from her office, Stanford set up shop in church parking lots and brought COVID-19 testing to communities of color. That mobile operation soon turned into the nonprofit Black Doctors COVID-19 Consortium, which has drawn national attention for Stanford’s tireless efforts to treat Philadelphia’s most vulnerable and most underserved populations—and to improve the nation’s still lagging vaccine equity.
