Tom Pelphrey Biography

Tom Pelphrey is an actor known for his work across television, film, and theater. Pelphrey received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in acting from Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University, where he also studied Shakespeare at the Globe Theatre in London. His first notable role was on the CBS soap opera "Guiding Light," playing Jonathan Randall, a portrayal that earned him two Daytime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Younger Actor in a Drama Series. Over two and a half years on the show, he was nominated for four consecutive Daytime Emmy Awards, winning twice.

After leaving daytime television, Pelphrey focused on stage and independent film. He became a founding member and artistic director of the Apothecary Theatre Company, a New York City-based nonprofit that develops and produces world premieres of new plays by emerging playwrights. The company produced the world premiere of "In God's Hat," which opened to positive reviews and sold out its run, with The New York Times describing the play as terrific. Pelphrey made his Broadway debut as Micky Deans in "End of the Rainbow," a play about the final days of Judy Garland that was nominated for multiple Tony Awards, and later appeared on Broadway in "Fool for Love" alongside Sam Rockwell and Nina Arianda, working with playwright Sam Shepard.

Pelphrey's television career includes a series of complex roles. He played Kurt Bunker, a former neo-Nazi trying to reintegrate into society, on Cinemax's action drama "Banshee." He was then cast as the drug-addicted billionaire Ward Meachum in Marvel's "Iron Fist." Pelphrey's portrayal of Ben Davis on Netflix's "Ozark" marked a significant moment in his career. His performance as Ben Davis, the bipolar brother of Wendy Byrde, received critical acclaim and led to nominations for the Critics' Choice Television Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series, the Satellite Award for Best Supporting Actor, and the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series. When he reprised the role of Ben Davis in the final season of "Ozark," he earned an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series.

In film, Pelphrey was cast as Joseph Mankiewicz in David Fincher's "Mank," which received 10 Academy Award nominations. He also appeared in "She Said," further demonstrating his range in dramatic film projects. On television, he starred in the Amazon Prime Video series "Outer Range" as Perry Abbott, the HBO miniseries "Love & Death" as Don Crowder, and the HBO series "Task" as Robbie Prendergrast. Pelphrey has also joined the cast of Marvel's "Daredevil: Born Again" on Disney+.

With a foundation in classical training, Emmy-winning daytime work, and a series of acclaimed dramatic performances, Pelphrey is recognized for his versatility and presence in the entertainment industry, spanning drama series, Broadway, and feature films.
