Bill Ripken embarked on his Major League Baseball journey in 1987 with the Baltimore Orioles, sharing the field with his brother Cal Ripken, Jr., and under the guidance of his father, Cal Ripken, Sr. This marked the only instance in Major League Baseball history where a father managed his two sons simultaneously. Following his tenure with the Orioles, Ripken held positions with the Texas Rangers, Cleveland Indians, and Detroit Tigers. In 1988, Ripken excelled in double plays, positioning second among American League second baseman with 110. His fielding prowess was particularly notable in 1992 when he recorded the highest fielding percentage (.9927) of any Major League second baseman. His offensive skills shone in 1990 when he led the Orioles with a .291 average and shared the top spot for the team with 28 doubles.
Ripken's contributions to Major League Baseball were recognized in 2002 when he was inducted into the Maryland Sports Hall of Fame. He also holds the record for the first RBI in interleague history, and is ranked 27th-best in all-time fielding percentage among Major League second basemen at .987. Undeniably, Ripken's 1989 Fleer baseball card gained particular fame due to an expletive on the bat knob, leading to multiple corrected versions and making the card a coveted collector's item.
Post his playing career, Ripken partnered with his brother to establish Ripken Baseball, an enterprise committed to promoting baseball at both youth and professional levels. Ripken Baseball owns and operates three minor league teams: the Aberdeen (MD) IronBirds, the Augusta GreenJackets, and the Charlotte (FL) Stone Crabs. In addition, in 2009, Ripken Baseball and MLB.com launched GetGreat.com, a youth baseball instructional site.
In 2001, Ripken co-founded The Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation in honor of his late father. This non-profit organization collaborates with Boys & Girls Clubs, P.A.L. centers, inner-city schools, and other youth-serving organizations to support programs in America's most distressed communities. The Foundation has impacted over 500,000 youth in communities across all 50 states.
Presently, Ripken is a prominent figure in sports broadcasting as a studio analyst for MLB Network and a radio host for SiriusXM. He joined MLB Network in March of 2009 and secured a Sports Emmy Award for Outstanding Sports Personality, Studio Analyst in 2015. In addition to his broadcast career, Ripken served as the 1st Base Coach for the United States team during the 2009 World Baseball Classic.
Ripken's extensive knowledge of baseball also extends to literature, having co-authored several books, including "Play Baseball the Ripken Way: A Complete Illustrated Guide to the Fundamentals" and "Coaching Youth Baseball the Ripken Way."
