Mariana Vasconselos’ company, Agrosmart, makes software that uses AI to help farmers monitor data from sensors in their fields on their mobile phones. The software provides features, such as climate modeling, to help them make more informed decisions when it comes to matters like crop irrigation and seeding crop volume.
Brazil-based Vasconselos, who is the daughter of farmers, founded the company in 2014 when she was 23. Her technology is becoming more crucial as climate change leads to increased periods of drought, and farmers have lower margins for error. Agrosmart brings digital agriculture to developing countries with low Internet infrastructure under tropical agronomic conditions, allowing farmers to make better decisions for more productive and sustainable agriculture. It monitors crops installing different sensors in the fields measuring up to 14 environmental conditions locally to identify the crops microclimate, and real-time needs while combining it with satellite imaging and weather forecast to help farmers make better operational decisions. The technology is currently available in Latin America, and Coca-Cola has been using the company’s technology to monitor its fruit farms in Espirito Santo.
She has degrees from UNIFEI, ESALQ, UCLA, and Singularity University, is a World Economic Forum honored Technology Pioneer, was nominated MIT Technology Review Innovators under 35, Forbes Under 30, and Fast Company 100 Most Creative. She is a global ambassador for Thought for Food, an expert in digital agriculture considered one of the 100 most influential agribusiness people by Dinheiro Rural Magazine. Vasconcelos was the keynote speaker at the 2021 Women in Agriculture Web Summit.
