Macroeconomist & Chancellor's Professor of Economics at University of California, Berkeley; John Bates Clark Medal Recipient; Research Associate & Co-Director of Monetary Economics Program at National Bureau of Economic Research
Emi Nakamura Biography
Emi Nakamura is a macroeconomist known for applying rigorous, data-driven empirical methods to key questions in economics. Nakamura serves as Chancellor's Professor of Economics at the University of California, Berkeley, where her research focuses on price dynamics, fiscal and monetary policy, and the sources of business cycle fluctuations. Her work utilizes innovative data sources and empirical techniques to analyze the impact of monetary and fiscal policy, combining economic theory, granular microdata, and econometrics. Nakamura's scholarship has influenced central bank and fiscal policy frameworks internationally.
Nakamura graduated summa cum laude from Princeton University with a Bachelor of Arts in economics, completing a senior thesis titled "An Economy with Monetary Business Cycles" under the supervision of Michael Woodford. She earned a Ph.D. in economics from Harvard University, where her dissertation, "Price Adjustment, Pass-through and Monetary Policy," was supervised by Robert Barro and Ariel Pakes. Before joining Berkeley, Nakamura was a professor in both the economics department and business school at Columbia University, contributing to research in international macroeconomics, industrial organization, and finance.
Nakamura's research has advanced the understanding of prices and policy in macroeconomics. Alongside frequent co-author Jón Steinsson, Nakamura was among the first to analyze the micro data underlying the U.S. consumer price index, revealing that previous measures of price flexibility did not account for factors such as temporary sales. She has examined the macroeconomy by analyzing large-scale databases at a granular level, including a project using retrofitted scanners to study historical price data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. In another study, Nakamura and Steinsson used variation in United States government military spending across states to estimate the open-economy government spending multiplier, providing evidence that fiscal stimulus can have significant effects on output, particularly at the zero lower bound. This research continues to inform policy discussions in macroeconomics.
Nakamura is a recipient of the John Bates Clark Medal, an annual award given to an American economist under age 40 for significant contributions to economic thought and knowledge. She is the fourth woman to receive the John Bates Clark Medal since its inception. Additional honors include a CAREER Award from the National Science Foundation, a Sloan Research Fellowship, the Elaine Bennett Research Prize from the American Economic Association, recognition as a member of Generation Next: Top 25 Economists Under 45 by the International Monetary Fund, and selection as one of the decade's top eight young economists by Economist.
Nakamura is a research associate and co-director of the Monetary Economics Program at the National Bureau of Economic Research and a co-editor of American Economic Review. She serves on the Congressional Budget Office's Panel of Economic Advisers, the American Economic Association Committee on National Statistics, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics Technical Advisory Committee. Nakamura has also been a visiting professor at the University of Chicago, the MIT Economics Department, and several central banks, contributing expertise on macroeconomic policy, data construction, and economic research.
