Thomas A. Lawson Biography

Thomas A. Lawson is president and chief executive officer of FM Global, one of the world’s largest commercial and industrial property insurers, where he is responsible for the strategic and operational direction of the company, which insures nearly US$9 trillion in business property in more than 130 countries. Named to his current position in 2014, Lawson is a recognized expert in industrial manufacturing risk.

For more than 35 years, Lawson has built a career that has included key posts in the forest products industry and the furniture and textile segment of the company’s business. During this time, he has served in a variety of managerial positions, including senior vice president, engineering and research; vice president, operations manager, forest products; field vice president and operations underwriting manager; regional engineering manager; and operations manager. Prior to his current role, he was executive vice president and responsible for FM Global’s global insurance operations.

Lawson, who joined FM Global in 1979, is a graduate of Illinois State University, Normal, Ill., USA, where he received a bachelor’s degree in occupational safety. He serves on the board of the National Fire Protection Association and is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
