Colin Hay Biography
Colin Hay is a Scottish-Australian musician, singer-songwriter, and actor recognized as the lead vocalist and sole continuous member of the band Men at Work, as well as for his work as a solo artist. Men at Work achieved international success, earning a Grammy Award for Best New Artist and selling more than 30 million records worldwide with number-one singles such as "Who Can It Be Now?" and "Down Under." The band's debut album, "Business as Usual," reached number one on the Billboard charts for 15 weeks and sold over 15 million copies. The follow-up album, "Cargo," also achieved commercial success and featured the hit single "Overkill." Hay was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame as a member of Men at Work at the ARIA Music Awards.
After Men at Work disbanded, Hay rebuilt his career as an independent artist, performing solo with an acoustic guitar and drawing from his catalog of Men at Work and solo material. He developed a reputation for engaging live performances, marked by storytelling and a shift in musical style from arena rock to folk-pop on albums such as "Topanga" and "Transcendental Highway." Hay's personal journey includes sobriety, which influenced his creative direction and output.
Hay's solo career is noted for his songwriting, storytelling, and comedic presence, with regular performances at LA's Largo club. His music has been featured in the Grammy-winning soundtrack for "Garden State" and on the television series "Scrubs," where he appeared as himself and performed an acoustic version of "Overkill." Hay has released a series of studio albums, including "Gathering Mercury," "Fierce Mercy," and "Now and the Evermore," as well as reinterpretations of earlier work on "Man at Work" and "Man at Work, Vol. 2." His work has been recognized by outlets such as Rolling Stone and NPR's World Café, and he has performed on major late-night television programs.
In addition to his solo career, Hay has toured internationally with Ringo Starr & His All-Star Band, released an audiobook of Aesop's Fables, appeared in the documentary "Waiting for My Real Life," and provided the voice for Fergus Flamingo in Disney's "The Wild." Hay also performs under the Men at Work name with a Los Angeles-based group, presenting the band's catalog to audiences worldwide. Hay's career reflects ongoing contributions to pop and rock music, live performance, and songwriting.
