Veteran Broadcast Journalist & News Anchor; Anchor of KCAL News; 25-Time Emmy Award Winner
Pat Harvey Biography
Pat Harvey is a broadcast journalist recognized for her long-standing career in Los Angeles television news. She serves as the anchor of the CBS LA 5 p.m., 6 p.m., 9 p.m., and 11 p.m. broadcasts and holds the distinction of being the longest-running anchor in prime-time news, having joined KCAL in 1989. Prior to Harvey's arrival in Los Angeles, the market had only had two Black weeknight news anchors, and her work contributed to paving the way for lead weekday and night anchors in Los Angeles, including Marc Brown, Christine Devine, and Michaela Pereira.
Harvey's path to Los Angeles was built on a career in national broadcasting. She began her career in Saginaw, Michigan, at WNEM-TV as a general assignment reporter and later produced and anchored the station's 6 and 11 p.m. newscasts. Harvey helped launch CNN Headline News and was later named co-anchor of CNN's "Daybreak" program. She also anchored CNN's morning news program, where she interviewed Ferdinand Marcos following the democratic elections in the Philippines. As a news anchor at Chicago Superstation WGN, Harvey's investigative reports on faulty pap smears led to legislation regulating cytology labs in the state. She moved to KCAL9 in Los Angeles to co-anchor the nation's first nightly three-hour newscast and later joined CBS2.
Throughout her career, Harvey has reported on major news stories, including local news events, political conventions, and presidential inaugurations. She covered the O.J. Simpson trial, interviewing dismissed juror Jeanette Harris, and reported from El Salvador during the civil war, Eastern Africa and Russia during the AIDS epidemic, South Africa for the first all-race elections, and Vatican City for the installation of Pope Benedict XVI. Harvey also conducted an interview with Grammy Award-winning rap artist Nipsey Hussle shortly before his passing. Her live coverage of the Eaton and Palisades fires included interviews with Mayor Bass, officials, and residents.
Harvey's broadcast journalism career has earned her 27 Emmy Awards, including three for Best Newscast, as well as two lifetime achievement awards: the LA Press Club's Joseph M. Quinn Award and the Golden Mike from the Radio & Television News Association. She was inducted into the National Association of Black Journalists Hall of Fame at the Newseum in Washington, D.C. Harvey received the LA Area Governor's Award from the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for her work at CBS2/KCAL9 and her philanthropic efforts. The city of Los Angeles and Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors declared October 30 Pat Harvey Day. The Los Angeles chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists honored Harvey with its Local Legacy Award and established the NABJLA Pat Harvey Scholarship for college students.
Beyond the anchor desk, Harvey has contributed to community service and philanthropy. She and four other TV anchorwomen formed the Good News Foundation, which built a computer lab for homeless children on Skid Row, a park and recreation center in South LA, and a library for homeless women at the Downtown Women's Center, as well as an annual college scholarship for aspiring female journalists. Harvey has advocated for children, education, the special needs community, breast cancer awareness, and victims of domestic violence. She was named a Susan G. Komen Circle of Promise Ambassador in the fight against breast cancer and received the Human Dignity award from the YMCA of Metropolitan Los Angeles. Harvey's enduring presence in Southern California journalism is marked by integrity, tenacity, and a commitment to the communities she covers, establishing her as a trusted voice in American broadcast news.
