Irish Singer-Songwriter & Humanitarian; Lead Singer of the Boomtown Rats; Founder of Band Aid & Live Aid
Sir Bob Geldof Biography
Bob Geldof is an Irish singer-songwriter, political activist, entrepreneur, and author whose career spans music, philanthropy, and global advocacy. Geldof first gained recognition as the lead singer of the Boomtown Rats, a key band in the punk rock movement, achieving a series of hits including "Rat Trap," the first New Wave track to reach number one in the United Kingdom, and "I Don't Like Mondays," a song addressing the issue of school shootings. In addition to his music career, Geldof appeared in film, most notably portraying Pink in the Pink Floyd film "Pink Floyd – The Wall."
Following his time with the Boomtown Rats, Geldof pursued a solo career, publishing his autobiography, "Is That It?," and working as a radio DJ, journalist, and television presenter. His solo albums include "Deep in the Heart of Nowhere," "The Vegetarians of Love," "The Happy Club," and "How to Compose Popular Songs That Will Sell." Geldof also co-founded the television production company Planet 24, which developed "The Big Breakfast."
A news report on the Ethiopian famine prompted Geldof's humanitarian efforts. He founded Band Aid, a charitable supergroup that recorded "Do They Know It's Christmas?" to raise funds for famine relief in Ethiopia. The single became the best-selling British pop single of its time. Band Aid later led to Live Aid, an international concert broadcast globally, raising significant funds for famine relief.
Geldof has received multiple Nobel Peace Prize nominations and the Man of Peace Award. He collaborated with Midge Ure to organize the Live 8 benefit concerts and served on the Commission for Africa, contributing to recommendations on aid, debt cancellation, and trade reform. Geldof chairs 8 Miles, a private equity firm investing in Africa, and advises the ONE Campaign. He is also a member of the Africa Progress Panel, advocating for sustainable development in Africa.
The Boomtown Rats reunited and released "Citizens of Boomtown," accompanied by a memoir from Geldof. His work has been recognized with honors including a knighthood, Nobel Peace Prize nominations, the Man of Peace Award, and distinctions from France, Portugal, and the Royal Geographical Society. Geldof is also a keynote speaker, sharing insights on music, philanthropy, politics, humanitarian issues, and human rights.
