Streetlight Manifesto Biography

Streetlight Manifesto is an American ska punk band formed in New Jersey, led by singer, guitarist, and primary songwriter Tomas Kalnoky. Several members were previously involved in New Jersey's third wave ska scene, including Kalnoky, a founding member of Catch 22, and members of One Cool Guy. After Kalnoky departed Catch 22, he and two former members, Josh Ansley and Jamie Egan, joined with three ex-members of One Cool Guy to form Streetlight Manifesto. The band established a distinctive, horn-driven sound that blends ska, punk, and jazz influences, contributing to the evolution of the ska punk genre.

Streetlight Manifesto released its debut album, "Everything Goes Numb," through Victory Records. The band headlined its first show at Rutgers University to a sold-out audience. While the group did not achieve mainstream commercial success, it received recognition in alternative music circles and regularly sold out live shows, drawing fans from across the United States and Canada. The band followed up with a re-recording of Catch 22's album "Keasbey Nights" before releasing its second album of original material, "Somewhere in the Between," through Victory Records to positive reviews.

The band's catalog expanded with projects such as "99 Songs of Revolution," a collaborative effort with Bandits of the Acoustic Revolution, featuring cover songs. Streetlight Manifesto also released "The Hands That Thieve," an album noted for exploring themes of anti-religion, mental health, deceit, and challenging authority. Concurrently, Kalnoky released an acoustic version of the album under his solo pseudonym Toh Kay, titled "The Hand That Thieves."

Streetlight Manifesto's career included a prolonged dispute with Victory Records, culminating in a lawsuit regarding the fulfillment of a four-album contract. After extended litigation, the parties reached a settlement, and the label sold the masters to the band, allowing Streetlight Manifesto to reissue its records through its own label, Pentimento Music Company. This resolution marked a significant moment for artist independence within the punk and ska music industries, with Kalnoky maintaining the band's commitment to remaining independent.

Now fully independent and in control of its catalog, Streetlight Manifesto continues to maintain a dedicated following within the ska punk community. The band's live performances are recognized for blending ska, punk, and jazz elements, and its discography, including "Everything Goes Numb" and "The Hands That Thieve," reflects a commitment to independent artistry and genre innovation.
