 Will Smith Biography

Very few performers have had as much success transitioning from the music scene to the film realm as Will Smith has. Being in the entertainment scene since the late '80s, today, Smith is one of the most recognized and esteemed performers and producers in the industry.

Will Smith was born Willard Christopher Smith, Jr. on September 25, 1968, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He attended Overbrook High School in Wynnefield, Pennsylvania, where he soon became known to his friends as "The Prince," due to his charming antics. Little did he know that this nickname would still have meaning over 30 years later.

Prior to his debut as a solo artist, Will Smith had already made a name for himself in the acting realm. In 1990, Will Smith was cast in the NBC sitcom, "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air," which starred Smith as the "Fresh Prince," a young, street-smart kid from Philly living in one of LA's wealthiest areas, Bel-Air. The family comedy proved to be a great success. It ran for six years and gave Smith a name in the industry.

It wasn't long before the movie offers came rolling in. One of his first roles was in the film Made In America, starring Whoopi Goldberg and Ted Danson. His next role in the Oscar-nominated film Six Degrees of Separation garnered him international respect after proving to the world that he could play roles more nuanced than the comical Fresh Prince. This eventually led to the 1995 box-office hit Bad Boys, which was one of the first-ever action films to feature two black lead actors.

After Bad Boys, things only got better for Smith. He starred in over a dozen films including Independence Day, Men in Black, Enemy of the State, Ali, I, Robot, Hitch and The Pursuit of Happyness, to name a few. In 2007, Smith starred in I Am Legend, a remake of the Charlton Heston film Omega Man, in which he battled bloodthirsty vampires. The film became an international hit.

Smith then took on the dual role of actor and producer for Hancock (2008), in which he played an alcoholic anti-superhero, and Seven Pounds (2008), about a man who sets out to change the lives of seven people. He also helped produce two more films released that year, Lakeview Terrace and The Secret Life of Bees.

After a hiatus, Smith returned to the big screen in 2012 with Men in Black 3, followed by a turn as a military commander in the critically panned M. Night Shyamalan sci-fi flick After Earth, which co-starred Smith's son Jaden. He then made a cameo as Lucifer in the 2014 film Winter's Tale.

Smith's next leading role came with the 2015 heist caper Focus, which co-starred Margot Robbie. Later in the year, he starred as Dr. Bennet Omalu in the sports drama Concussion, earning a Golden Globe nomination for his role as a doctor fighting to raise awareness about head trauma in NFL players.

In 2016, Smith starred as Deadshot in the action movie Suicide Squad, and later that same year, he appeared in the film Collateral Beauty, in which he played an advertising executive who entered a deep depression after suffering a personal tragedy.

In 2017, Smith starred in the Netflix film Bright and launched his own YouTube channel. In 2019, Smith starred as the Genie in the live-action remake of Disney classic Aladdin, taking over the role Robin Williams voiced in the 1992 film.
