Max Abrahms Biography

Dr. Max Abrahms is an associate professor of political science and public policy at Northeastern University, specializing in terrorism, counterterrorism, national security, international security, and international relations. Abrahms holds a doctorate in international relations and comparative politics from the University of California–Los Angeles, a Master of Philosophy in international relations from Oxford University, and a Bachelor of Arts in political science and history from the University of Pennsylvania, where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa and summa cum laude.

Abrahms is recognized for his research in terrorism studies, counterinsurgency, conflict resolution, counterterrorism, and extremism, with his work frequently cited in academic and policy circles. He has published on terrorism and international security in leading outlets including International Security, International Organization, Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, The New York Times, and The Washington Post, among other scholarly and popular venues. His research often challenges prevailing perspectives in terrorism studies and is widely referenced and assigned globally.

Abrahms is the author of "Rules for Rebels: The Science of Victory in Militant History," a book that examines the behavior of militant groups, including their target selection, social media strategy, and likelihood of political success. He has published extensively in top-ranked peer-reviewed journals in international relations and has authored three books on terrorism, two with Oxford and one with Routledge.

Abrahms has held fellowships and affiliations with institutions such as the Center for International Security and Cooperation at Stanford University, the Empirical Studies of Conflict project at Princeton University, the Dickey Center for International Understanding at Dartmouth College, the Combating Terrorism Center at West Point, the Council on Foreign Relations, the Center for Cyber and Homeland Security at George Washington University, the Dayan Center at Tel Aviv University, the political science department at Johns Hopkins University, the Observer Research Foundation in New Delhi, and the Belfer Center at Harvard. Abrahms regularly briefs government agencies, including the Central Intelligence Agency, National Intelligence Council, National Counterterrorism Center, and Department of Homeland Security. He serves as a counterterrorism expert for multinational corporations such as Amazon and provides expert testimony in federal terrorism litigation for major law firms. Abrahms presents his research to academic audiences worldwide, including at Harvard, MIT, Stanford, and St. Andrews, as well as at venues such as MENSA and TEDx Hollywood. He is a frequent speaker at international security forums, including the Munich Security Conference and the Raisina Dialogue in New Delhi.
