Tom Farrey Biography
Tom Farrey is a sports journalist and policy advocate whose career spans more than four decades at the intersection of media, athletics, and public life. Farrey joined the Aspen Institute following his tenure at ESPN, where his journalism was recognized for innovation and excellence. He began his digital media career at Starwave as deputy editor, contributing to the development of the website that became ESPN.com, and later became the first reporter to produce cross-platform enterprise reports. Over 21 years at ESPN, Farrey's stories contributed to the reputation of the television show "Outside the Lines," earning national honors, including two Emmy Awards, an Edward R. Murrow Award, and an Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Award. His reporting also appeared on SportsCenter, E:60, ABC's "World News Tonight," "Good Morning America," and "This Week with George Stephanopoulos."
Farrey's investigative journalism at ESPN addressed significant issues in sports, including an exclusive report on the torture of Iraqi athletes by Uday Hussein, which led to the disbanding of the Iraqi Olympic governing body by the International Olympic Committee. He also reported on the use of steroids by baseball players and conducted a hidden-camera investigation of Tijuana pharmacies. His work on football safety, athlete abuse, and drug testing ethics received recognition from the Black Journalists Association, Asian American Journalists Association, and the Women's Sports Foundation. Farrey was named one of the 100 Most Influential Sports Educators in America by the Institute for International Sport at the University of Rhode Island.
As an author, Farrey is known for his analysis of college and youth sports. He wrote "Game On: The All-American Race to Make Champions of Our Children," which examined contemporary youth sports and contributed to the launch of Project Play, an Aspen Institute initiative focused on building healthy communities through sports. "Game On" has been used as a required text in university courses across the country.
Farrey is the founder and executive director of the Aspen Institute's Sports & Society Program, which convenes leaders, facilitates dialogue, and develops solutions to help sports serve the public interest. The program has provided thought leadership on topics such as the future of college sports, athlete advocacy, Title IX, and the role of sports in addressing climate change. Project Play has inspired organizations and governments to implement new policies and has helped unlock significant grant funding for grassroots sports programs. Farrey also co-authored the Children's Bill of Rights in Sports, endorsed by leading organizations and athletes.
Farrey has served as a keynote speaker and moderator at major conferences, including the Aspen Ideas Festival, the World Summit on Ethics & Leadership in Sports, the TAFISA World Congress, and the White House Conference on Health, Hunger and Nutrition. As a writer and convener, Farrey has advanced dialogue on the role of sports in society, exploring intersections with education, globalization, technology, race, and economics.
