Lee Pace Biography
Lee Pace is a classically trained American actor known for his work across film, television, and stage. Pace was accepted by the Juilliard School's Drama Division as a member of Group 30, a cohort that also included actors Anthony Mackie and Tracie Thoms. He graduated from Juilliard with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, after which he starred in several off-Broadway plays, including "The Credeaux Canvas" and "The Fourth Sister." He starred in a limited engagement of the Off-Broadway production "Small Tragedy," winning an Obie Award and earning a nomination for a Lucille Lortel Award in the category of Outstanding Actor.
Pace first gained widespread attention with his breakthrough role in the Showtime biopic "Soldier's Girl," in which he portrayed Calpernia Addams, a real-life transgender performer. The film won the Peabody Award, while Pace earned nominations from the Golden Globes, the Independent Spirit Awards, and the Satellite Awards, and received the Gotham Award for Breakthrough Actor. He went on to demonstrate versatility in a range of projects, most notably as the lead in Bryan Fuller's fantasy series. On television, Pace is known for his starring role in Bryan Fuller's award-winning series "Pushing Daisies," for which he was nominated for a Golden Globe and Emmy Award in the category of Outstanding Lead Actor. His film work during this period included a starring role in Tarsem Singh's "The Fall" and a supporting turn in Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln."
Pace's career expanded into major film franchises with his roles as Thranduil, king of the Mirkwood Elves, in Peter Jackson's adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Hobbit," and as Ronan the Accuser in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, appearing in "Guardians of the Galaxy" and "Captain Marvel." He also starred in the period drama thriller "Halt and Catch Fire" on AMC, which presented a fictionalized view of the personal computer revolution and the early days of the World Wide Web.
On Broadway, Pace made his debut in Larry Kramer's play "The Normal Heart," portraying Bruce Niles. He later starred as Joe Pitt in the Broadway revival of "Angels in America." His stage performances, including his role in the Tony-winning play "Angels in America," have contributed to his reputation as a dedicated stage actor.
Pace has taken on the role of Brother Day, Emperor of the Galaxy, in the Apple TV+ science fiction series "Foundation," based on Isaac Asimov's novels. The series has received positive reviews, with particular praise for Pace's performance, as well as its epic scale, visual effects, and score. Pace also serves as an executive producer on the project. He has been cast in the remake of "The Running Man," further demonstrating his range across genres. With a career spanning off-Broadway productions to global franchise blockbusters, Pace continues to bring depth and commitment to every role.
