Jenny Slate Biography

Jenny Slate is an actress, comedian and author known for "Parks and Recreation," "Big Mouth," "The Secret Life of Pets," "Zootopia," "Marcel the Shell" and more.

Alongside comedian Gabe Liedman, Slate was half of the comedy duo Gabe & Jenny until 2015 when they ended the show due to their busy schedules. Their show with Max Silvestri, "Big Terrific," was named best new variety show of 2008 by Time Out New York. She met Liedman in 2000 while attending Columbia University.

Throughout 2008 and 2009, Slate regularly performed her one-woman show, "Jenny Slate: Dead Millionaire," at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater (UCBT) in New York City.

From 2009-2010, Slate was a cast member on Saturday Night Live. Prior to joining SNL, Slate was best known as a regular commentator on many VH1 talking head commentary programs. In early 2009 She had made several appearances on the "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon" recurring sketch 7th Floor West where she played an NBC page, later promoted to Fallon's assistant (also named Jenny),and she had a recurring role on HBO's "Bored to Death" and also starred in the 2009 short film Obvious Child.

Slate has made guest appearances on television programs such as "Bob's Burgers," "Girls," "The Whitest Kids U' Know," "Important Things with Demetri Martin," "Drunk History" and "Raising Hope."

In August 2010, Slate co-wrote and voiced the stop-motion short film "Marcel the Shell With Shoes On", directed by Dean Fleischer-Camp, about a shy, shoe-wearing shell, which garnered unexpected viral success. This led to a follow-up, "Marcel the Shell with Shoes on, Two," video released on November 14, 2011.

Slate also wrote a "Marcel" themed children's book that was released on November 1, 2011. Her first major film role was as the quirky Zoe in the third Alvin and the Chipmunks film, "Chipwrecked," with more films to follow in 2012, including the voice of Ted's mother in "The Lorax."

Slate played Mona-Lisa Sapperstein on "Parks and Recreation" alongside Ben Schwartz, who played her brother Jean-Ralphio. Though supporting characters, the Sapperstein siblings became fan favorites.

Slate appeared as Liz B. in the recurring "PubLIZity" sketches in Kroll Show, as well as many other recurring and one-off characters, performing in some capacity in almost every episode until the series ended in 2015. In 2016, Slate voiced Dawn Bellwether in the Disney animated comedy-adventure film "Zootopia" and Gidget in the animated feature "The Secret Life of Pets." She voiced Gidget again in "The Secret Life of Pets 2."

Slate and her father co-wrote a book titled "About the House," about their time living in Slate's childhood home in Milton, Massachusetts, which was published in December 2016.

In 2017, Slate starred in the film "Gifted" as Bonnie Stevenson, the teacher of a 7-year-old mathematical genius, along with Chris Evans, who played the child's guardian. Slate currently voices the character Missy Foreman-Greenwald on the animated Netflix series "Big Mouth."
