Tyler Clary Biography

Scott Tyler Clary is an American former competition swimmer and Olympic gold medalist. In his Olympic debut at the 2012 Summer Olympics, Clary won gold in the 200-meter backstroke in Olympic record time. In total, he won sixteen medals in major international competitions: three gold, eight silver, and five bronze spanning the Summer Olympics, the FINA World Championships, the Pan Pacific Championships, and the Pan American Games.

Setting multiple record-breaking times, Tyler Clary stands as one the world’s best in swimming and has earned himself an impressive number of titles. Hailed to be the next international star, Tyler Clary had a phenomenal year in 2009 breaking Michael Phelps’ American Record in the 400yd IM and breaking Ryan Lochte’s NCAA record in the 200yd backstroke one day later. Clary also broke the American record in short course meters at the 2009 Mutual of Omaha Duel in the Pool in Manchester, England. At the University of Michigan, where he majored in Computer Science, Clary was a 3-time NCAA Champion.

Clary retired from swimming after failing to qualify for the 2016 Summer Olympics. He placed third in the 200 meter backstroke, behind Ryan Murphy and Jacob Pebley. A motorsports enthusiast, Clary stated he intends to switch to NASCAR, with the goal of joining the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series in 2021.
