 Gary Hall, Jr. Biography

One of the fastest swimmers in United States history and in organized competition worldwide, a three-time Olympian, ten time Olympic medalist, American record-holder, and hero to millions of swimmers and diabetes patients, Gary Hall Jr. is clearly an American treasure. Mr. Hall’s success in the sport comes as no surprise since he comes from a long line of swimmers. His first big win came in 1992 when he won his first title at the Junior National Championships. This win jump-started his international swimming career -- a career that has seen ups and downs, superb performances when the pressure was highest, as well as mistakes and setbacks.

Mr. Hall made Americans proud when he won two individual silvers and two relay gold medals, at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, anchoring the USA’s world-record at that time, setting 400m freestyle and medley relays with two of the fastest splits in history.

Gary Hall, Jr. is known for his competitive edge, often flexing at big swim meets as an outward show of his confidence, but in 1999 he was put to an incredible test that challenged his faith, strength and desire to continue competing. After collapsing at a party, he was diagnosed with Type-1 diabetes and thus began a new challenge for Mr. Hall as he tried to accept his disease, understand the disease, and ultimately fight the disease by getting back in the game even though many of his doctors told him that he would not be able to continue competing.

In order to find a way to cope with the disease, Mr. Hall took some time off and flew to South America. Upon his return to the States, he sought the opinion of an endocrinologist at the USC Keck School of Medicine in Los Angeles. Dr. Anne Peters assured him that there was no reason to quit competitive swimming. Under Dr. Peters’ watchful eye, Gary Hall, Jr. was finally finding his way back into life and the sport. He also found a new appreciation for life in general and admitted that he was not taking anything for granted. He went back into serious training with and made it to the United States Summer Nationals, which were the qualification for the Pan Pacific Championships. He made an impressive comeback by winning the 50 meter freestyle, earning his fourth National title.

He continued to compete and set his focus on the U.S. Olympic Trials in 2000, where he won the 50 meter freestyle and placed second in the 100 free, qualifying him for four events at the 2000 Olympics. Gary Hall, Jr. found tremendous success at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney. He won an individual gold in the 50 meter freestyle, sharing it with his teammate and training partner at Berkeley, Anthony Ervin. He also won gold and silver in the relays and the bronze medal in the 100 meter freestyle.

Mr. Hall’s successful track record at the Olympics followed him to Athens for the 2004 summer games. His competitive spirit paid off as he became the second most decorated Olympian of all-time, tied with Carl Lewis. In competition, Mr. Hall won the gold medal and successfully defended his title as the world's fastest man by winning the 50 meter freestyle for the second time. Mr. Hall and his father, Gary Hall Sr., are the only father/son duo in Olympic history in any sport to make three Olympics each.

Outside the pool, Mr. Hall travels the world, passionately sharing his love for the sport of swimming and his experiences as a diabetic, with children, parents, coaches, doctors, and executives. He serves as a national spokesperson for Johnson and Johnson's Life Scan, The American Diabetes Association, and for Novo Nordisk.
