Legendary Pop & Soul Vocalist; Six-Time Grammy Award Winner; Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductee; Known for "Walk on By"
Dionne Warwick Biography
Dionne Warwick is a six-time Grammy Award winner whose voice has shaped American pop and soul music for more than six decades. Warwick has earned more than 75 charted hit songs and sold over 100 million records. She began singing professionally after being discovered by the songwriting team Burt Bacharach and Hal David. Her first single, "Don't Make Me Over," attracted both R&B and pop audiences. Warwick is second only to Aretha Franklin as the most-charted female vocalist of all time, with 69 singles making the Billboard Hot 100.
Warwick was the first African American female recording artist to achieve a dozen consecutive Top 100 hit singles. Her collaborations with Bacharach and David produced a series of enduring songs, including "Walk on By," "I Say a Little Prayer," "A House Is Not a Home," "Alfie," and "Heartbreaker." Warwick became the first African American solo female artist to receive a Grammy Award for "Do You Know the Way to San Jose." She later won a Grammy for the album "I'll Never Fall in Love Again," becoming the first African American solo female artist of her generation to win the award for Best Contemporary Female Vocalist Performance.
Warwick's commercial success continued with "Then Came You," a duet with The Spinners, and a Platinum-selling album, "Dionne," produced by Barry Manilow, featuring hits "I'll Never Love This Way Again" and "Déjà Vu." Warwick achieved her biggest hit with "That's What Friends Are For," which topped the pop, R&B, and adult contemporary charts and raised funds for AIDS research. Three of her hits from the 1960s—"Alfie," "Don't Make Me Over," and "Walk on By"—have been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.
In addition to her recording career, Warwick has contributed to television and humanitarian efforts. She hosted music programs including "Solid Gold" and the Soul Train Music Awards, and starred in "Dionne and Friends." Her autobiography, "My Life, As I See It," was published with David Freeman Wooley, and the documentary "Dionne Warwick: Don't Make Me Over" explores her life and career. Warwick was appointed a U.S. Ambassador of Health by President Ronald Reagan and named a United Nations Global Ambassador for the Food and Agriculture Organization.
Warwick has received honors such as Kennedy Center Honors and induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. She has also been recognized by the Hollywood Walk of Fame, the Grammy Hall of Fame, the National Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame, and the Apollo Theater Walk of Fame. Warwick's career as a pop and soul music artist, activist, and performer continues to influence artists and audiences worldwide.
