Monica Pope is a prominent figure in Houston's culinary industry, recognized for her innovative approach to local, seasonal cuisine. Often referred to as the "Alice Waters of the Third Coast," Pope has played a significant role in shaping the city's restaurant landscape. She is the only Texas woman to be named a Top 10 Best New Chef by Food & Wine Magazine, establishing her reputation through a food philosophy centered on sourcing ingredients from local farmers and promoting the farm-to-table movement.
Pope learned to cook from her Czech grandmother and later earned her chef's title from Prue Leith's School of Food and Wine in London. After gaining experience in Europe and San Francisco, she returned to Houston to open the Quilted Toque, followed by Boulevard Bistrot, t'afia, and Sparrow Bar + Cookshop. Her restaurant t'afia received both local and national recognition, appearing on several Best New Restaurant lists in Bon Appétit, Gourmet, and Texas Monthly. T'afia was also featured in O: The Oprah Magazine and Fortune.
Pope has received national attention as a James Beard Award nominee and as a competitor on the second season of "Top Chef Masters" on Bravo. She also appeared on Food Network's "Ready, Set, Cook." Pope was named Best Chef at the Houston Culinary Awards. In addition to her television appearances, Pope is the author of the digital cookbook "Eat Where Your Food Lives" and has worked on a cooking memoir titled "Eating Hope (and Other Things I've Had to Stomach)."
Beyond her restaurants, Pope is active in culinary advocacy and community engagement. She is the founding chair of the Recipe for Success Foundation's Chefs Advisory Board and serves on the board of a Houston-based nonprofit focused on combating childhood obesity. Pope has participated as a media spokesperson and national advocate, including as part of a delegation to the White House for the launch of Michelle Obama's Chefs Move to Schools initiative. She also co-founded the organization I'll Have What She's Having, which raises awareness and funds for women's healthcare in the hospitality industry. Through her culinary ventures, advocacy, and public engagement, Pope has contributed significantly to American culinary culture and the advancement of sustainable, local food practices.
