Jesse James Keitel is an American actress, writer, and artist recognized for contributions to LGBTQ+ representation in television and film. After earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts in acting from Pace University, Keitel developed performance skills as a drag artist in New York City under the stage name Peroxide, as part of the House of Femanon. As Peroxide Femanon, Keitel appeared in Logo TV's "Fill In The Blank" docuseries and participated in Sasha Velour's New York Fashion Week collaboration with Opening Ceremony.
Keitel transitioned to screen acting with roles including a guest appearance on TV Land's "Younger" and a part in the Netflix film "Alex Strangelove." Keitel was featured in Out Magazine's OUT100 list. A breakthrough came with the short film "Miller & Son," which received the BAFTA Student Film Award and a gold medal for Best Narrative (Domestic) at the Student Academy Awards. Keitel also starred in the world premiere of Martin Moran's play "Theo" at Two River Theater.
Keitel's casting in the ABC crime drama "Big Sky" as Jerrie Kennedy marked a significant moment for non-binary and transgender representation, as Keitel became one of the first non-binary actors to portray a non-binary series regular on primetime television and ABC's first openly transgender series regular. Keitel has been an advocate for authentic LGBTQ+ representation in Hollywood.
Continuing to advance trans visibility, Keitel played Ruthie in Peacock's reimagining of "Queer as Folk," portraying a trans woman navigating personal growth. The role allowed Keitel to depict a trans woman's journey both before and after transition, offering a nuanced perspective on transgender experiences in television. Keitel has discussed the personal and professional challenges of the role, including the impact of filming intimate scenes.
Keitel's additional television credits include an appearance in "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" as a non-binary villain. Keitel also stars in Prime's "56 Days" alongside Dove Cameron and Avan Jogia, and serves as executive producer for the docuseries "T-Town," which highlights trans entrepreneurs.
