Emmett Shear Biography
Emmett Shear is an Internet entrepreneur, investor, and currently serves as the interim CEO of OpenAI. He is the co-founder of live video platforms Justin.tv and gaming spin-off TwitchTV, which was later acquired by Amazon for $970 million. Shear's leadership has been instrumental in Twitch's expansion beyond gaming live-streams and esports to include music, traditional sports, cooking, and the creative arts. He's a part-time partner at venture capital firm Y Combinator, and co-founder of Kiko Software, the first AJAX-based online calendar.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Shear donated $1 million to start SF New Deal, a non-profit organization aimed at supporting San Francisco's local businesses and communities. His technology and community service earned him a place in Forbes' "Forty Under 40".
Shear is a part-time partner at Y Combinator, where he offers advice to the new startups in each batch. He was a member of the first batch of YC-funded startups for Kiko Calendar and was funded by YC again for Justin.tv. Shear graduated from Yale University in 2005 with a degree in computer science, and is known for his insightful views on the impact of AI on civilization.
