Celine Sciamma

Céline Sciamma is recognized for her distinctive contributions to contemporary international cinema, particularly in the realm of French film. Before attending La Fémis, the French film school, Sciamma earned a master's degree in French literature at Paris Nanterre University. Initially focused on screenwriting and criticism, Sciamma was encouraged to direct by filmmaker Xavier Beauvois, who chaired her evaluation panel. She wrote her first original script for "Water Lilies" as part of her final evaluation at La Fémis. "Water Lilies" was selected for screening in the Un Certain Regard section at the Cannes Film Festival and won the Louis Delluc Award for a first film. The film also secured three nominations for the César Awards, with Sciamma nominated for Best Debut.

Sciamma's subsequent features established her as a filmmaker known for precision and empathy in storytelling. Her film "Tomboy" was written and shot in a condensed timeframe before premiering at the Berlin International Film Festival, where it won the Teddy Award for films with queer topics. The film was later included in French educational programs. "Girlhood" was selected for the Directors' Fortnight section at Cannes and also screened at the Toronto International Film Festival and the Sundance Film Festival. In interviews, Sciamma described "Girlhood," "Water Lilies," and "Tomboy" as a trilogy of coming-of-age films. In addition to directing, Sciamma contributed as a screenwriter to Claude Barras' animated film "My Life as a Courgette" and André Téchiné's "Being 17."

With her fourth film, "Portrait of a Lady on Fire," Sciamma achieved international recognition, receiving numerous nominations and awards at film festivals and award ceremonies. The film won the Best Screenplay award and the Queer Palm at Cannes, making Sciamma the first woman to receive the latter. It was also nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film. Sciamma was invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Her fifth feature, "Petite Maman," premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival and later screened at the San Sebastián International Film Festival, where it won the Audience Award. MK2 Films acquired rights to Sciamma's complete filmography, premiering a re-edited version of "Tomboy" at the Berlin Film Festival, where Sciamma received an honorary Teddy Award for her cultural and artistic impact.

Beyond filmmaking, Sciamma is active as an advocate and public intellectual in the film industry. She has served as co-president of the Society of Film Directors (SRF) and co-founded the Collectif 50/50 pour 2020, aiming for gender parity in the French film industry. Sciamma gained international attention at the Cannes Film Festival, leading a group of women in protest against the underrepresentation of women's work. She and the "Portrait of a Lady on Fire" team also made headlines by walking out of the César Awards in protest. Sciamma's work consistently explores themes such as gender fluidity, sexual identity among girls and women, and the female gaze. Her films, particularly "Portrait of a Lady on Fire," have sparked global discussions on the female gaze and have become significant within contemporary feminist culture.
