Casey Stoner is recognized as one of the most skilled motorcycle racers in MotoGP history. Born in Queensland to a family passionate about motorcycles, Stoner began competing at age four on a Gold Coast dirt track. By 14, he had claimed 41 national titles and 70 state titles. Due to age restrictions in Australia, his family relocated to Europe to support his pursuit of a road-racing career. Progressing through the 125cc and 250cc classes, Stoner joined the MotoGP World Championship at age 20, finishing eighth overall in his debut season.
Stoner's move to Ducati marked a turning point in his career. He secured his first MotoGP victory at the opening round in Qatar and went on to win nine additional races that season, earning the Championship title. Stoner delivered Ducati's first MotoGP World Championship and became the first rider in more than 30 years to win the MotoGP title on a European-made motorcycle. He was also the second youngest premier-class World Champion. Stoner's consistent results contributed to Ducati's first MotoGP Constructors World Championship. Known for his ability to extract performance from any motorcycle, Stoner achieved race wins on the Ducati chassis even as Honda and Yamaha advanced in development.
After joining Honda, Stoner captured a second world championship, winning 10 races and securing the title by winning his home Grand Prix with two rounds remaining. He achieved victories at every Grand Prix venue during his career and dominated his home track, Phillip Island, winning six consecutive times on a factory bike. Over 115 MotoGP races, Stoner recorded 38 wins, 69 podiums, 39 pole positions, 29 fastest laps, and 1,815 points. Stoner announced his retirement from Grand Prix racing at age 27, citing burnout, while still performing at a high level.
Stoner has openly discussed personal challenges, including his diagnosis with chronic fatigue syndrome. In his autobiography, "Casey Stoner: Pushing The Limits," he detailed his experiences with the condition and its impact on his life. His openness has contributed to greater awareness of ME/CFS within the motorsport community and beyond.
Stoner's achievements in motorcycle racing have been recognized with several honors, including the Young Australian of the Year Award and appointment as a Member of the Order of Australia for his contributions to the sport. He has been named a MotoGP Legend and inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame and the MotoGP Hall of Fame. Stoner has participated in MotoGP events, including demonstration rides and Hall of Fame ceremonies, maintaining a presence in the motorcycle racing industry.
