Alexa Karolinski Biography
Alexa Karolinski is a German writer, director, and producer whose work spans music videos, commercials, documentary film, and television. Karolinski earned an MFA in social documentary film from the School of Visual Arts in New York City, where her film "Oma & Bella" began as her thesis project. The documentary explores the lives of her grandmother and her grandmother's best friend, two women connected by their shared experiences of Nazi persecution. The film follows the two survivors as they navigate daily routines, cooking, and discussing their pasts. "Oma & Bella" premiered at the Berlin Film Festival and received the Grimme Prize. Karolinski was also recognized by Filmmaker Magazine as one of the 25 New Faces of Independent Film.
Karolinski's second feature documentary, "Lebenszeichen" ("Signs of Life"), is an essay film examining how Jews and gentiles in Germany ritualize historical memory. She also directed the documentary "Fashion at War: Crafting the Nazi Brand," which investigates the role of German fashion label Hugo Boss during the Nazi era. In collaboration with artist Ingo Niermann, Karolinski created the video project "Army of Love," which was exhibited at the Berlin Biennale and Museum Castello di Rivoli. Her work consistently explores themes of Jewish identity, historical memory, and cultural belonging through a personal and cinematic approach.
Karolinski and Anna Winger co-created and co-wrote the miniseries "Unorthodox" for Netflix, the platform's first Yiddish-language show. Inspired by Deborah Feldman's autobiography, "Unorthodox: The Scandalous Rejection of My Hasidic Roots," the series received multiple Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Limited Series, and a BAFTA TV Award. "Unorthodox" is recognized for its depiction of a young woman leaving a Hasidic community.
After "Unorthodox," Mark Gordon Pictures acquired the rights to adapt Calla Henkel's novel "Other People's Clothes," with Karolinski set to adapt the work. She also appeared on screen, portraying a young Hannah Arendt in the Netflix miniseries "Transatlantic." In addition to her film and television projects, Karolinski has collaborated with the fashion brand Eckhaus Latta, using storytelling inspired by fashion, art, and design in both personal and commercial projects. As a companion to her film "Oma & Bella," Karolinski authored a cookbook of the same name. Her body of work bridges documentary filmmaking, cultural history, and narrative storytelling.
