Sally Buzbee Biography

Sally Buzbee is an American journalist with a career spanning more than three decades across major news organizations. Buzbee served as executive editor of The Washington Post, becoming the first woman to lead the newsroom in its history. Prior to joining The Washington Post, Buzbee worked at Associated Press for more than 30 years, serving as executive editor and senior vice president during the final years of her tenure. She began her career as a reporter in Topeka, working under AP statehouse correspondent Lew Ferguson.

During her time at Associated Press, Buzbee held roles as reporter and editor across the United States and led the AP's Middle East region, overseeing coverage of the U.S.-led Iraq war, Israeli conflicts with Hamas and Hezbollah, and the Iran nuclear and Darfur crises. She later served as Washington Bureau Chief, overseeing coverage of two presidential elections. Under her leadership, the bureau received a Pulitzer Prize for investigative reporting on national security. As executive editor, Buzbee managed a multiplatform operation of approximately 2,800 journalists in 250 locations across 100 countries. She directed coverage through major global events, including the COVID-19 pandemic, the presidency of Donald Trump, the #MeToo movement, Brexit, protests over racial injustice, and the U.S. election. Her leadership contributed to Pulitzer Prizes in feature photography and international reporting, as well as multiple Pulitzer finalists.

At The Washington Post, Buzbee oversaw the newsroom during a period in which it received six Pulitzer Prizes. She appointed the organization's first senior managing editor, chief product officer and managing editor, created new deputy managing editor roles, and added editor positions. Buzbee expanded international investigations, developed new election-night features, and enhanced coverage of wellness and climate. She oversaw reporting that received the Pulitzer Prize for public service for coverage of the January 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol and the national reporting prize for an investigation into the AR-15's role in U.S. mass shootings.

Buzbee later joined Reuters as news editor for the United States and Canada. She serves on the board of the Committee to Protect Journalists and is a judge for the Livingston Awards for young journalists and the Gerald Loeb Awards for business reporting. Buzbee holds a journalism degree from the University of Kansas and an MBA from Georgetown University. Her career reflects a commitment to editorial leadership, investigative journalism, and the evolution of digital newsrooms.
