D. A. Carson Biography

    1. Carson (Donald Arthur Carson) is a Canadian evangelical theologian recognized for his contributions to New Testament scholarship and biblical theology. Carson earned a Bachelor of Science in chemistry from McGill University, a Master of Divinity from Central Baptist Seminary in Toronto, and a Doctor of Philosophy in New Testament from the University of Cambridge. He joined the faculty at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School after presenting a paper at a theological conference and served as Distinguished Emeritus Professor of New Testament.

Carson has written or edited approximately 60 books and served as president of the Evangelical Theological Society. His expertise includes biblical theology, the historical Jesus, postmodernism, pluralism, Greek grammar, Johannine theology, Pauline theology, and the problem of suffering and evil. Notable works by Carson include "Exegetical Fallacies," "Pillar New Testament Commentary: The Gospel According to John," "The Gagging of God," "Showing the Spirit: A Theological Exposition of 1 Corinthians 12–14," and "The Intolerance of Tolerance." "The Gagging of God: Christianity Confronts Pluralism" received the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association Gold Medallion Award.

Carson is the editor of the Pillar New Testament Commentary series and co-edited "Commentary on the New Testament Use of the Old Testament" with G. K. Beale, as well as the Studies in New Testament Greek series with Stanley Porter. His works addressing the interaction of church and culture include "The Inclusive Language Debate," "Becoming Conversant With the Emerging Church," and "Christ and Culture Revisited." A Festschrift honoring Carson, titled "Understanding the Times: New Testament Studies in the 21st Century: Essays in Honor of D. A. Carson on the Occasion of His 65th Birthday," highlights his influence in New Testament studies.

Carson co-founded The Gospel Coalition with pastor Tim Keller, contributing to its mission of renewing faith in the gospel of Christ and reforming ministry practices to align with Scripture. He served as President of The Gospel Coalition before transitioning to the role of Theologian-at-Large. Carson has been invited to preach and lecture at conferences globally, engaging audiences with his approach to gospel-centered theology and Christian leadership.

Due to the progression of Parkinson's disease, Carson concluded his public speaking and ministry responsibilities. His legacy continues through his extensive scholarship, teaching, and leadership in evangelical theology. Carson's work remains influential among pastors, scholars, and Christian thinkers worldwide.
